It depends on the time of year you plan to travel – if you’re heading to Hungary in winter, be prepared with lots of warm layers, boots, thick socks and a quality coat. Be sure to pack comfortable shoes for exploring the historic sites as well as your appetite for sampling the delicious Hungarian cuisine, including goulash and chimney cake.
The city of Budapest is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, walking the line between old world and thoroughly modern, while Lake Balaton is a must for nature lovers. Eger is a historic town known for its stunning baroque architecture and thermal baths, Debrecen is known for its cultural scene and Szentendre boasts more galleries and museums than you could possibly see in one visit.

Hungary’s peak travel season coincides with summer (June to August), however if you prefer slightly more mild temps and less crowded sites, consider the shoulder seasons from March to May or September to November. Spring is a beautiful time to travel as you’ll see the countryside awash with wildflowers. That said, Christmas in Hungary is also pretty magical, with markets, delicious baked goods and plenty of festive cheer.
One thing’s for certain, you won’t go hungry in Hungary! You could easily (and merrily) fill your days and nights eating and drinking your way around Budapest. If you’re up for a little adventure, soak in the thermal baths, visit Lake Balaton for a spot of hiking or biking, explore the countryside, sip wine amongst the vineyards, check out some castles or attend a festival, that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
