Sweden Destination Guide

A vast country in northern Europe, Sweden is the largest of the Nordic countries and an eternal paradise for nature loves.

Taking a Sweden holiday is the perfect excuse to dust off your skis and head to the Scandinavian Mountains or why not try your luck at something new like kayaking, horseback riding and ice-skating?

A land of lakes and castles, it is hard to know where to start when plotting out Sweden tours. Explore fascinating Viking history in towns like Sigtuna and Uppsala or check out Sweden's own ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi, situated 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland.

Consult your Sweden travel guide for the best time to try to see the incredible Northern Lights and combine your stay in the Arctic Circle with a dog sledding excursion.

Sweden is easily accessible at all times of year and flights to Sweden are frequent from many cities throughout Europe. See the country pass by your window travelling by train if you are coming from Denmark, Norway, Germany or Finland, or book a berth on a cruise along the Baltic Sea.

Within Sweden getting around is easy, although most travellers prefer to go long distances by train or by bus, as driving through the enormous countryside can become tiring.

In addition to the gorgeous scenery and many outdoor activities Sweden offers, a visit to the capital is a must. Stockholm is the country's largest city, made up of 14 islands connected by a network of over 50 bridges.

See Stockholm from all angles

Enjoy a visit to the changing of the guards at the Royal Palace, then go for a stroll in the quaint Old Town, known as Gamla Stan, where you can explore the area's most charming cafes and restaurants.

Catch a ferry to one of Stockholm's islands or, to see the city from a different angle, brave your fear of hights on the highly regarded Stockholm roof top tour. Don't worry - you'll be fully strapped in with a safety belt and hard hat as you traverse multi-story buildings.

Gothenburg is another important city in western Sweden. Boasting the largest university in Scandinavia, Gothenburg University, it is a youthful city with some of Sweden's best nightlife.

Gothenburg's position on the coast also makes it one of the country's best food destinations and the seafood is renowned for being fresh and delicious.

For cultural activities, check out the impressive Gothenburg Opera House, the Museum of World Culture or the Universeum Science Museum – all perfect escapes from the sometimes wild and woolly Swedish weather.
