Frequently asked questions

As its name suggests, a world cruise is an ocean cruise that circumnavigates the globe. It also applies to global cruise voyages (sometimes called grand voyages) that sail between multiple continents without necessarily finishing up at its port of origin.

In short, there are a lot! A quick list of the most popular luxury and family-orientated world cruise lines that will take you around the globe, includes: Royal Caribbean International; Cunard; MSC; Holland America Line; Oceania; Viking; Regent Seven Seas, Silversea; Princess and more.

You can embark on world cruise adventures on vessels large or small. Depending on the size of your ship, stateroom options include inside cabins, ocean view cabins, balcony cabins, spacious suites and special accommodations designed for family use. Cruise lines also offer accessible cabins for guests with mobility issues.

Yes, but it depends on the cruise line and the itinerary. Some cruises offer you flexible embarkation points at various ports, while others may have restrictions. We advise that you check with a travel agent for availability, specific ports of call, and any additional costs or requirements for joining partway through the voyage. Keep in mind that booking in advance is usually necessary to secure your spot and ensure a smooth integration into the ongoing cruise.

We recommend booking a world cruise 12 to 18 months in advance. This allows for better availability, selection of preferred accommodations, and potentially lower prices. Booking early also provides you time to plan visas, vaccinations, and travel insurance. Some cruise lines offer early booking discounts, and securing your spot well ahead can ensure you get the itinerary and cabin type you want. However, last-minute deals might also be available, so if you're flexible, you could find savings closer to departure.

Around the world cruises typically last between three to six months depending on the route taken and how long your ship docks in ports along the way. You can also opt to do world cruise segments which can be shorter and easier on your finances.

World cruise adventures dock at just about every destination around the globe with a port. From far-flung tropical islands such as Mauritius in the Indian Ocean and Cabo Verde in the Atlantic to landmark seaside cities such as Miami, Sydney, Cape Town, London, New York, Tokyo and Singapore. World cruise itineraries also transit Egypt’s Suez Canal to take in Mediterranean destinations such as Athens, Rome and Barcelona, while also frequenting the Panama Canal to take in island destinations in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

Whether or not your cruise is all inclusive varies by cruise line. Some luxury world cruises offer all-inclusive packages that cover meals, beverages, and sometimes shore excursions. In contrast, mainstream lines like MSC and Princess Cruises offer great value because almost everything is included in one price. Your cruise fare will include accommodation, all meals, non-alcohol drinks and onboard facilities like swimming pools, fitness centres, live entertainment and activities for kids and teens. Some things may incur extra charges, like specialty restaurants, alcoholic drinks and spa treatments. Specific world cruise deals may vary based on the cruise line, stateroom selection and package booked.

World cruises offer a seemingly endless range of onboard activities from fitness classes, swimming pools, water slides and spas to entertainment like theatre performances, live music, and on-deck movie screenings. Culinary classes, wine tastings, and lectures by guest speakers are often available. Many cruises feature themed parties, dance classes, and games. For relaxation, there are often libraries, art galleries, and lounges. Activities cater to all ages, with kids' clubs and teen programs on many ships. Specific offerings vary by cruise line and ship, so check the itinerary and schedule for detailed options.

A valid passport is essential, and visas may be required if you’re wanting to go ashore at many of your ports of call. Your passport will need to have at least two blank pages and a minimum of six months validity from when you arrive back.

It’s also important to pack insurance documents and copies of prescriptions. A small first-aid kit and power adapters are also useful. Consider packing a day bag for excursions and a formal outfit for special dinners. Check the cruise line’s guidelines for specific dress codes and recommendations.

Make sure you pack clothing for varying climates. In addition to summery poolside and beachwear clothing, prepare also for evening wear when dining, theme party costume, warmer layers for when it gets windy on deck and sturdy footwear for shore excursions.
