Whether you’re headed to Rio and want to experience Carnival for the first time or planning a return trip to explore lesser-known corners of the country, this guide covers the best things to do in Brazil in 2025.

From samba-fuelled cities to untamed natural wonders, the South American giant of Brazil has something for every kind of traveller. And now that SAA has direct flights to Sao Paolo, there’s nothing holding you back from a dream South American adventure!

In this blog

We’ve got everything from rainforest adventures to postcard-perfect beaches and street festivals. Here’s everything you need to know about what to see, what to do, and why Brazil belongs on your bucket list.

1. Experience Rio de Janeiro’s Greatest Hits

No Brazil itinerary is complete without a few days in Rio de Janeiro. Start with the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado Mountain (one of the New Seven Wonders of the World) and take in sweeping views of the city and Guanabara Bay.

After that, head to Sugarloaf Mountain by cable car, stroll the white sands of Copacabana and Ipanema, and make time for a wander through the cobbled streets of Santa Teresa. While you’re there, don’t miss the Selarón Steps, a rainbow-hued tribute to Brazilian creativity and global connection. And obviously, a visit to Copacabana Beach is a non-negotiable.

Planning your visit around February? Catch Rio’s world-famous Carnival, where colourful costumes, samba schools, and endless parades take over the city. Just be sure to book early because this is Brazil at full volume.

2. Stand in Awe at Iguazu Falls

Located on the border of Brazil and Argentina, Iguazu Falls is one of the most spectacular natural wonders on the planet. With around 275 individual waterfalls spread across nearly 3 kilometres, it’s a jaw-dropping display of nature’s power, even if you’ve already done the almighty Vic Falls closer to home.

The Brazilian side offers panoramic views and the famous Devil’s Throat walkway, where you can get close enough to feel the spray on your face.

3. Dive Into Afro-Brazilian Culture in Salvador

Salvador, the heart of Bahia in northeastern Brazil, is a feast for the senses. This UNESCO-listed old town is known for its colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and deep African roots. Expect street drumming, colourful buildings, and a proud cultural identity reflected in everything from music to food.

Sample acarajé (a deep-fried bean cake) from a street vendor, visit the Candomblé temples, or join a Capoeira class. Salvador’s Carnival rivals Rio’s for vibrancy and sheer vibes; just with a more local feel and less tourists. So if you want an authentic but not over commercialised version of Carnival, head to Salvador!

4. Explore the Amazon Rainforest or Pantanal Wetlands

If wildlife sightings are on your wishlist, head to the Amazon or Pantanal. The Amazon, best accessed via Manaus, offers incredible river cruises, jungle treks, and biodiversity that feels otherworldly. But for those who want clearer wildlife sightings, the Pantanal—particularly around Campo Grande—is the place to spot jaguars, capybaras, giant otters, and caimans.

You’ll find eco-lodges, expert guides, and South America’s answer to our bushveld.

5. Hike Through Chapada Diamantina National Park

Located in Bahia, Chapada Diamantina is Brazil’s best-kept hiking secret. With flat-topped mountains, dramatic canyons, underground rivers, and epic waterfalls, it’s an outdoorsy person’s paradise. You’ll find excellent trails near Lençóis, which is a charming little town with good local infrastructure.

It’s quieter and more off the beaten path than many Brazilian hotspots, but that’s part of the charm! If your South African escapes involve Drakensberg hikes or Cape walking trails, it’s ideal. And you’ll get a sense of a lesser-seen side of Brazil too.

6. Relax on Brazil’s Most Beautiful Beaches

With over 7,000km of coastline, Brazil has no shortage of incredible beaches. Some of the standouts include:

  • Ilha Grande – A small island off the coast, this is a slice of paradise. Think rainforest-fringed beaches, no cars, and plenty of snorkelling spots.
  • Florianópolis – Home to more than 40 beaches, this southern island is a favourite with surfers and foodies.
  • Pipa – A laid-back beach town where you can spot dolphins and enjoy unspoiled stretches of coast.
  • Fernando de Noronha – A protected marine park with pristine beaches and crystal-clear water, perfect for diving and turtle spotting.
  • Porto de Galinhas – Known for its natural pools during low tide and a family-friendly atmosphere.

7. Discover São Paulo’s Culture and Street Art

Often overlooked for its flashier sister city Rio, São Paulo is a cultural heavyweight. It’s home to world-class museums like MASP, cutting-edge street art in the Vila Madalena neighbourhood, and one of the most diverse food scenes in South America.

In fact, it’s probably one of the best destinations in South America for food-lovers, with no less than 17 Michelin-starred restaurants to choose from.

Direct flights from Johannesburg mean you’ll likely be at the Sao Paolo airport at some point during your trip, so why not make it into a stay of a few days?

Travel Tips for Visiting Brazil

  • When to go: November to March is peak summer, but the shoulder seasons (April and October) offer fewer crowds and pleasant weather.
  • How to get around: Brazil is huge, so short domestic flights are the easiest way to travel between regions.
  • Safety: Like many big destinations, it’s important to stay aware. Avoid flashy jewellery, don’t walk alone at night, and use common sense in unfamiliar areas.
  • Money: $100 (around R1,900) can go a long way, especially outside major cities. Street food and transport are very affordable.
