Consistently voted as one of the best opera houses in Europe, this modern theatre and opera house complex is the home of Oper Frankfurt Company, itself voted one of the finest opera companies in the world. The Frankfurt Opera House hosts some of the finest productions in the world and many famous opera singers began their careers in this highly regarded venue.
The building itself is of a modern appearance with elements of the old 1902 opera house incorporated in its design. The beautifully ornate, gothic looking 1902 opera house was destroyed in 1944 during the World War II air raids and some of the historic staircases and walls survived to live again in the new opera house. A new structure was built in 1951 and much of this was destroyed by an arson fire in 1987. The year 1991 saw a glorious re-opening with a world premiere concert conducted with the most state-of-the-art equipment available anywhere.
The Frankfurt Opera House is a premiere location from where many productions commence. Revivals are also a mainstay here and have helped Frankfurt Opera House achieve consistent attendance records. The venue also hosts orchestra concerts and recitals for opera, dance, piano and other instrumental forms.
Guests with tickets to the opera travel for free on public transport from five hours before the performance until service ends that day. Tickets that allow free travel must be purchased directly from the opera. The underground (U-Bahn) lines U1, U2, U3, U4 and U5 as well as trams 11, 12 and N8 stop at Willy-Brandt Platz. Taxi stands are also next to the opera house.
