Luxembourg Destination Guide

Natural beauty, art and culture all collide in pint-sized Luxembourg. Despite being the second smallest country in the European Union, Luxembourg punches well above its feather weight and offers visitors a surprising variety of things to see and do.

Nestled between Germany, Belgium and France, holidays in Luxembourg are especially popular for lovers of old world sites. Pack plenty of camera memory because at almost every turn you'll encounter interesting museums, impressive architecture, and historic castles and forts.

Luxembourg City

Sharing its name with the country, capital Luxembourg City is where most Luxembourg travel guides recommend starting your holiday.

See little Luxembourg's biggest sites

Known as the 'Gibraltar of the North' for its heavily fortified old city, Luxembourg City's big ticket attraction is UNESCO World Heritage site, The Bock. A network of underground fortifications, The Bock dates all the way back to the 18th Century.

Tick off your Luxembourg City itinerary by visiting the capital's other standouts including Neumünster Abbey, the Grand Ducal Palace and the Cathedral of Notre Dame.

Somewhere Luxembourg really shines is in the kitchen and foodies can rejoice because little Luxembourg City is home to a high number of Michelin star restaurants.

If you can't spare the Euros for fine dining, rest assured that Luxembourg meal standards are high, even in cheaper restaurants. For something special on a budget seek out local delicacies such as spicy sausages or potato pancakes, or one of the many different cuisines of Luxembourg's large expat population.

Most flights to Luxembourg fly directly into the capital but that doesn't mean you shouldn't discover more of this speck on a world map.

Be charmed by the colourful countryside

Vianden is a town straight out of a fairy tale, located only an hour away from Luxembourg City by public transport. Once there you can enjoy a tour of the beautiful Vianden Castle or take a chairlift up the hill to admire the view.

Another day trip option is the small city of Remich, a winemaking town in the Moselle valley.

In addition to the deep-rooted culture and stunning architecture of Luxembourg's towns and cities there is another side to this dynamic nation – its gorgeous countryside.

Self-proclaimed "the green heart in Europe", Luxembourg is full of forests, rivers, lakes and valleys. Hire a car in Luxembourg so you can take your pick of which one of the country's many natural wonders to explore.

Perfect for taking a hike surrounded by peaceful scenery is Echternach. Luxembourg's oldest town, Echternach was founded in 698 by an English monk.
