Here's your guide to where you can travel without a visa, as well as countries where you can get a visa on arrival or go through a simple e-visa application process. And if you’re looking for more than a quick visit, we’ve also pulled together some options for digital nomad visas for South African passport holders.

If travel admin isn’t your thing, you’re in luck. The South African passport gets you into more than 100 countries without the headache of lengthy visa appointments. From quick getaways to long-term working holidays, there’s a whole world you can explore with nothing more than your passport and a few easy forms.

Visa-Free Countries – Just Your Passport Needed

The easiest travel win is going somewhere that doesn’t ask for a visa at all. No forms, no fees, and complete spontaneity. For these visa-free destinations, South Africans can just book, pack, and go.

South African passport holders can now visit around 78 countries visa-free. Short-haul favourites include Namibia holidays, where wide-open desert landscapes are the order of the day, and Mauritius holidays, famous for gorgeous beaches, busy markets, and Creole-inspired food scene.

Further afield, Thailand holidays now give South Africans 60 days visa-free. If you want something completely different to home, Thailand is ideal for mixing city stays with island-hopping. Brazil also offers 90 days to explore everything from Rio’s coastline to the Amazon, and Singapore holidays are another option. Here, you’ll have 30 days visa-free to sample one of the most efficient and food-focused cities on the planet. Plus, Changi airport alone is a dream!

For tourists visiting the UAE, you will need to obtain a visa in advance (UAE Embassy in Pretoria & the UAE Government portal).

Here’s the full list of where you can go visa-free:

Visa on Arrival Countries – Land and Go

If visa-free isn’t an option, visa on arrival (VOA) is the next best thing. You’ll usually fill in a short form and pay a small fee at the airport before being stamped in. No embassy visits, no long waits. It’s basically like being visa-free, just with a tiny bit of admin once you land. And we do mean a tiny bit!

You could step right into Bali, sorting your VOA in minutes, and heading straight to the beach. Or board a flight to the Maldives armed with little but your suitcase and swimsuit, ready to board the speedboat to your island stay.

Here’s a full list of countries which issue a visa on arrival for South Africans, some at a small price:

CountryStay AllowedWhy Go
Cambodia30 daysAngkor temples and rural countryside.
Egypt30 daysPyramids, Nile cruises, and Red Sea resorts.
Indonesia30 daysBeaches, rice terraces, and island culture.

eVisa Destinations – Apply Online

An eVisa is still a visa, but a much simpler one. You complete the application online, pay the fee, and get your approval by email, often in just a couple of days.

The fee varies but these visa applications are often easier than in-person applications and some of them are free, or super affordable!

Digital Nomad & Long-Stay Visas – Live Abroad, Work Remotely

For those who want to work while they travel, digital nomad visas make it possible to settle in for months — sometimes even years — as long as you meet the entry requirements. Is it visa free? No, but these stays allow you to travel somewhere and experience it as far more than just a visitor.
