Pristine white-sand beaches which stretch for miles, permanently warm waters, and coconut trees galore - Seychelles is what holiday dreams are made of.

Yet another of the Indian Ocean gems, this archipelago is a firm favourite for honeymooners, adventurers, and beach lovers. If you’re looking for a bucket list island getaway and want to go slightly further afield than Mauritius, here’s your guide to everything you need to know about Seychelles

In this blog

Must-See Places in Seychelles

No trip to Seychelles is complete without soaking in its most iconic sights. Start with La Digue’s Anse Source d’Argent, often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world. But surely a beach is a beach, right? You’ll feel differently after you’ve seen this one, thanks to the signature granite boulders and shallow, clear waters.

Then there’s Vallée de Mai on Praslin Island, a UNESCO-listed nature reserve. It’s home to the rare coco de mer palm and lots of exotic wildlife. If you’re after a day of exploring rather than relaxing, Morne Seychellois National Park in Mahé is chock a block with hiking trails, plenty of which give you amazing panoramic views of the island. And a visit to Curieuse Island to see its famous giant tortoises is a must!

Must-Do Experiences in Seychelles

There’s more to Seychelles than just lazing on the beach (although that’s a great option too!).

For a touch of luxury, book a sunset cruise and watch the sky turn golden from the deck of a catamaran.

When you’ve had your fill of relaxing with a book or a drink, get your exercise in with some snorkelling and diving in the Sainte Anne Marine Park. If you’re a true ocean-lover, it’s an experience like no other, with crystal-clear waters which are home to unbelievable amounts of marine life. Land-loving adventurers can hike the Copolia Trail, where the summit views stretch far beyond Mahé’s coastline.

And for a unique and free cultural experience which feels authentic and local, spend time at Beau Vallon Beach on a Wednesday evening, where the vibrant local market comes alive with music, food stalls, and handmade crafts.

Seychellois Food Specialties to Try

Seychellois cuisine is a delightful blend of Creole, French, and Indian influences. –. When you’re in Seychelles, be sure to try grilled red snapper fish. It’s often seasoned with a mix of local spices and served fresh from the grill.

If you’re feeling adventurous, sample the local favourite, shark chutney. It’s not quite Mrs Balls, but it’s a surprisingly delicious mix of shark meat, bilimbi fruit, and spices. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!

Finally, don’t leave without tasting ladob, a traditional dessert made from banana or sweet potato cooked slowly in coconut milk and vanilla.

The Best Hotels to Book in Seychelles

For a luxury escape, Club Med Seychelles is a great option. There’s a reason they’re world leaders in all-inclusive resorts, and you won’t have to lift a finger while you’re there. The offering includes stunning beachfront villas, world-class dining, unlimited drinks, and a huge choice of activities.

If you’re looking for something charming, Fisherman’s Cove Resort is a fantastic option. The beachside pool blends straight into the ocean, and the dining room looks out over endless sea views too.

If you prefer low key and budget-friendly stay should consider Coral Strand Hotel. It’s conveniently located on Beau Vallon Beach with great access to local dining and activities, and gives you good bang for your buck. Trust us, Seychelles doesn’t have to be eye-wateringly expensive!

Expert tip

Make sure you visit Beau Vallon which has a beautiful long white sandy beach and a promenade with food and souvenir stands - it's undoubtedly the lively area of Mahé.

The Must-Knows About When, Where, and How to Get There

Seychelles enjoys warm temperatures year-round, but for the best balance between weather and budget, visit during the shoulder seasons of April-May or September-October. You’ll get calm seas and less crowds.

A 5 to 7-day trip is the perfect length. This gives you time to explore Mahé, hop over to Praslin and La Digue, and still enjoy plenty of beach relaxation. If you’re looking to really unwind and enjoy island life, extend your stay to 10 days for a slower pace.

Here are some extra tips to get the best out of your Seychelles holiday

  • Book your flights early! Seychelles is a popular destination, and flights from South Africa can fill up quickly, especially in peak season.
  • Use the ferry system. Island-hopping between Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue is easy with regular ferry services, but book in advance during busy periods.
  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen. The Seychelles government is serious about protecting its marine environment, and many standard sunscreens contain harmful chemicals. Opt for an eco-friendly version.
  • Try the local buses! They’re an affordable way to get around Mahé and Praslin, offering an authentic experience for budget travellers.
  • The local currency is the Seychellois Rupee (SCR). As a rough guide, 1 South African Rand (ZAR) is approximately 0.70 SCR, but exchange rates vary, so check before you travel.
