Family holidays are all about making memories together. But as any parent knows, choosing a destination that works for the whole crew isn’t always easy, especially with different interests or big age gaps.

But finding the right destination is worth it, because planning around what your kids love can help everyone have the holiday they’re dreaming of, whether that’s a teens’ trip full of rollercoasters and thrills or a budding chef’s trip to Italy to learn to make pasta by hand.

This guide is designed to help you pick the perfect spot for your next holiday. You know your kids’ interests best, so from animal lovers and little artists to thrill-seekers and history buffs, here’s how to find the ideal destination for your next family adventure, with your child’s (or children’s!) interests in mind.

For Animal Lovers: Safaris, Sea Turtles & Wildlife Wonders

If your little one lights up at the thought of lions, elephants or penguins, there are plenty of options where the wild things are. Local safaris in South Africa are a great place to start. If your little one dreams of becoming a ranger, head to Shamwari’s Riverdene Family Lodge in the Eastern Cape, where the Kids on Safari programme teaches wildlife tracking and conservation. In the Waterberg, Ant’s Nest offers pony rides and hands-on encounters with giraffes and other wildlife. For a Big Five experience, Kapama River Lodge near Hoedspruit has guided game drives suitable for families and a dedicated play zone. In fact, there are so many lodges in South Africa which offer family-friendly game drives, junior ranger programmes, and hands-on bush activities to keep the kids entertained. The hardest part will be picking your favourite one. Some even have babysitting services or wildlife-themed kids’ clubs. After all, the adults probably want some downtime too!

Further afield, Mauritius and the Maldives offer fantastic marine life encounters. In Mauritius, resorts like Beachcomber Cannonier offer glass-bottom boat rides, snorkelling trips, and pedal boats. Some resorts in Mauritius now feature eco-focused kids’ clubs, making it one of the best holiday destinations for families.

In Mozambique, snorkelling around the Bazaruto Archipelago near Vilanculos is exceptional. Arrange a boat trip out to the reef with stops to swim and picnic on the beach. Sea turtles are frequently spotted in season, and if you're lucky, you might even see a dugong.

Looking for something nearby? The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast has warm water, tidal pools, and dolphin-watching tours. Try Umdloti or Salt Rock for quieter beach breaks. Or head down to Hermanus for some of the country’s best whale watching spots.  And if you prefer something more structured, certain family cruise holidays sometimes include wildlife-themed shore excursions and nature activities on board.

For Adventurous Kids: Hikes, Ziplines & Jungle Fun

If your child is always on the move and bounces off the walls at home, pick a destination packed with action…preferably of the outdoor variety! They’ll have a blast, and hopefully they’ll be exhausted from all the running around, so you can have some blissfully quiet times in the evening while they crash out in preparation for the next day’s activities.

Costa Rica is a dream for adventurous families. You can zipline through cloud forests in Monteverde, hike near Arenal volcano, and spot sloths in the jungle. In the Dominican Republic, Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda includes tightrope walking, archery, and aerial trapeze for kids.

One year-round destination that always delivers on action-packed family fun is the Swiss or French Alps, where you could take them skiing or snowboarding. This way, they spend the day learning a new skill and making memories. Pick a Club Med if you want them to have the added benefit of included ski lessons and extra activities with other kids, like theatre shows and dinners.

Heading to the Alps during summer? Not only is it gorgeous with rolling fields and giant peaks, but there’s loads of hiking to be found in the area too.

Dubai is another great pick for adventure lovers, especially if your kids are a little older. It’s a top-notch destination for theme parks, sandboarding, dune bashing, and desert exploration. You get a great sense of the wild and plenty of adrenaline rushes, without feeling like you’ve gone too far off the beaten path.

Back home, the Drakensberg’s adventure lodges like Dragon Peaks and Alpine Heath offer horse riding, canopy tours, and climbing walls in stunning mountain settings. If you want some coastal time, Tsitsikamma and the Stormsrivier area is a real winner. There are options galore for busy kids, including kayaking, swimming, walking, ziplining, and more. Plus, these local picks are great value and don’t require international flights.

For Curious Minds: Museums, Monuments & Cultural Finds

For kids who ask “why” on repeat, opt for a destination where they can learn while they explore.

Europe is packed with cultural stops that are genuinely fun for families. In Rome, visit the Colosseum and explore underground catacombs. In Paris, the Natural History Museum and Cité des Enfants are both excellent. Want to see more in one trip? A family rail adventure across Europe is the way to go. Whether you’re in Germany, Spain, France, or even Scandinavia, Europe is home to countless hands-on museums, kid-friendly walking tours, and local experiences

If you want your kids to experience a totally different culture, Asia is always a sure bet. Thailand and Vietnam are popular and affordable options where you’ll find cooking classes, floating markets, and temple visits. In Tokyo, try samurai museums, futuristic malls, hands-on science displays, or even a traditional tea ceremony.

Finally, Egypt is also a brilliant choice, with tours designed around the Pyramids, the Valley of the Kings, and the Nile.

For Creative Kids: Cook, Paint, Perform

For little chefs, dancers, artists and drama stars, a holiday filled with creative outlets is the dream. A cooking class in Italy. A flamenco show in Spain. A traditional craft workshop in Bali. Cultural holidays are full of moments to learn something new together.

In New York, you can visit real Broadway stages or spend an afternoon at the immersive Children’s Museum of the Arts. In Italy or Spain, you could try local cooking classes or visit galleries. In the UK, explore the West End or treat the kids to a trip to Harry Potter world.

For Water Lovers: Snorkels, Surf & Sandy Feet

If your child’s ideal day involves never getting out of the pool, you’ll want to plan a holiday around the water.

Mauritius is still a firm favourite among South African families thanks to its great value and direct flights. Plus, loads of the resorts offer kids-stay-free specials and they have everything from family pool and kids clubs to water sports and kid-friendly buffets.

For calm seas, consider the Seychelles, Zanzibar, or Koh Samui. These destinations suit younger swimmers and those learning to snorkel. Zanzibar is catching up to Mauritius in terms of popularity thanks to short, direct flights and incredible value deals. Plus, you can combine a resort stay (and plenty of time spent in the water) with a trip to Stone Town for an authentic adventure.

For something different, a cruise combines water slides, kids’ clubs, movie nights, and port stops with gorgeous beaches and obviously, endless sea views. Most of the cruise ships have pools and water slides galore too, so even when you’re sailing, they’ll have their swimming fix.

Want to stay local? A Durban beach holiday ticks all the right boxes with warm water, family-sized apartments, and loads to do. A stop at uShaka Marine World is practically a must-do if you have a water-obsessed kid. And even the teens and grownups will enjoy their visit to see all kinds of marine life and have a go on the water slides too.

For Teens and Tweens

Your older kids probably want more freedom when they’re on holiday. So, although plenty of these options would still tick the box (after all, who wouldn’t love skiing in Switzerland or dune bashing in Dubai?) another strategy is to go for resorts that balance independence and entertainment. The Atlantis Dubai is a teen dream, with its waterpark, VR gaming zone, and shark safaris.

On a Mediterranean cruise, teens can explore new destinations by day and enjoy onboard movie nights or escape rooms. MSC Cruises even has dedicated teen lounges and late-night activities. Other cruise lines like NCL and Royal Caribbean offer rock climbing, surf simulators, kids clubs, water slides, and even go-karting…all on board.
