Pittsburgh Destination Guide

Pittsburg Holidays

Pittsburgh was formed where three great rivers converge – the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio, creating a once mighty industrial center that put this town on the map.  Like its progressive leaders of the industrial age, Pittsburgh continued its forward looking optimism, shook off its industrial past and embraced the information age like no other city.  Today this attractive and modern city is all the more dynamic with its beautiful riverfront parks, scenic views, old world charm and iconic cultural institutions.  For a particularly stunning view of the city take a ride on the ‘Incline’, a mountain side trolley type car that climbs Mount Washington.  From the top of the mountain an incredible cityscape vista opens up.

Top Attractions »

Pittsburgh was the recipient of industrial age benefactors who out of love for their great city generously built magnificent museums and libraries which influenced Pittsburgh’s love of culture and the arts.  One such famous museum is the Carnegie Museum of Art which opened in 1896.  Other significant museums include the Andy Warhol Museum, the Heinz History Museum and the National Aviary.  Take a walk through downtown’s Market Square with its shops and restaurants and continue through the city taking note of its beautiful buildings and interesting architecture.  Walk to Point State Park which features a large water fountain and lovely riverfront settings.  It is from this point where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form one of the most important waterways in the United States, the Ohio River.

The restaurant scene in Pittsburgh is varied and enjoyable with many of the best local eateries being in the downtown area or nearby neighbourhoods of Mt. Washington, Oakland and Bloomfield – all areas with great ethnic foods.  These areas are also home to many specialty grocers, cafes and coffee houses and are big local hang outs.  Trendy cocktail bars and lounges are common in all of these areas and even offer many of the great local and international beers whereas the Strip District is known for its nightclub scene.  Downtown has its share of bars and jazz lounges as well as Liberty Avenue  where many gay owned bars, restaurants and shops are located.

Where to Stay

Many of the hotels are located downtown with some luxury brand names to choose from.  Hotel prices are generally quite reasonable in Pittsburgh but there are even more affordable options located in the outer suburbs in many national budget hotel chains.

Shopping »

While the downtown scene doesn’t have a large amount of retail stores there are some big name department stores with a presence there including Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue.  Neighbourhood retail areas include the quaint Shadyside area in the East End – South area or Station Square on the south side.

Pittsburgh Like a Local

There are a myriad of festivals taking place in Pittsburgh throughout the year and local residents enjoy attending outdoor concerts, art fairs and public gatherings year round.  With Pittsburgh’s large German and eastern European population, Oktoberfest and Polishfest are just two of the most popular.  One of Pittsburgh’s biggest local attractions is the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, an amazing 24 mile stretch of riverside pathways for joggers, bikers and hikers.  There are over 2,000 acres of gorgeous public parks as well which residents enjoy all year round for picnics, leisurely strolls and family gatherings.
