Johannesburg Destination Guide

Johannesburg Holidays »

A city built on the discovery of glittering gold, Johannesburg now shines brighter than ever. This vibrant metropolis is the economic heart of South Africa and boasts attractions that include casinos, swanky bars and restaurants, theatres, galleries and museums. All the action and adventure you would expect from city life and yet Johannesburg is just a stone’s throw away from some of the most beautiful game reserves in the country.

Top Attractions »

Museums like the Apartheid Museum give visitors a glimpse at the country’s turbulent past and the Soweto Struggle Sites pay homage to the heroes who fought for freedom and democracy. Escape the bustle of the city in the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens, or take to the skies in a hot air balloon and sip some bubbly as you watch the sun set over the City of Gold.
Visit the famed Vilakazi Street in Soweto, home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners – the late Nelson Mandela and Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.  Looking for a little more glitz and glamour? Try the Gold Reef City Casino for slots, table games, spectacular shows and Salone Privé for high rollers.  Unwind at one of the City’s many Spas, or take rest and relaxation to the next level at a luxury game lodge outside the city. Many of the reserves are a relatively short drive away and offer excellent accommodation.

Where to Eat and Drink »

Johannesburg’s food scene is an eclectic mix of European, Indian and African fare. For a taste of local flavour visit a township tavern and feast on potjiekos and brijani or mogodu and samp, and wash it all down with a heady home-brewed beer. Have a juicy steak at the Casino, or feast on fresh vegetables at one of the city’s many vegetarian restaurants. Stop at the Jozi food market for handmade goodies and the smell of fresh bread that will have you longing for your grandmother’s kitchen.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Johannesburg caters to every need. While business travellers enjoy the convenience of high-rise city hotels, families and leisure travellers prefer the guest houses, boutique hotels, spas and lodges. With something to suit every taste and budget you are sure to find the perfect base from which to explore the City.

Shopping »

Johannesburg loves to shop. Whether from giant chain stores, neighbourhood goods markets or small boutiques they practically have it down to an art. If you are looking for something special to take home with you, visit one of the craft markets and support a local artist. The local art is not only of a very high standard, but it also offers a lesson in South Africa’s cultural heritage. From carved masks to intricate beadwork – the art often has cultural significance – something the friendly store owner will be glad to explain.

Good to know in Johannesburg

  • When sightseeing and exploring the city, apply the same caution and sensibility you would at home.
  • The African sun is hotter than you might think, so wear sunscreen at all times.
  • If you want to go on a township tour, be sure to use a reputable tour guide that knows and respects the community.
  • If there is a restaurant you really want to visit – make a reservation as soon as possible.
