Top Wine Farms for Couples
If you’ve been dreaming about a romantic escape, a special anniversary trip, or even just a weekend where you can properly switch off together, the Cape Winelands should be right at the top of your list.

If you’ve been dreaming about a romantic escape, a special anniversary trip, or even just a weekend where you can properly switch off together, the Cape Winelands should be right at the top of your list.
There’s something about Cape Town’s wine farms that naturally lends itself to romance. Maybe it’s the mountain views, the long lunches, the fireplaces in winter, or the way wine tasting somehow forces everyone to slow down a little and appreciate the little things in life.
It’s true that almost anywhere around Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, or even further afield has a touch of romance, but some estates feel especially perfect for couples.
These are the places I keep recommending for anniversaries, date days, weekend escapes, or simply those afternoons where you disappear into the Winelands together and forget to check the time. If you’re planning a special date, these spots should be right at the top of your list.
La Motte Wine Estate
La Motte has a very calm, polished atmosphere that works beautifully for couples. Everything feels thoughtful here, from the beautifully kept gardens to the art gallery and tasting room with its fireplaces and impressive Pierneef collection.
“It’s refined without feeling intimidating,” is how I usually describe it to people who want to know what to expect before they arrive. The estate somehow manages to be elegant but still warm and welcoming, which makes it ideal for couples who want something romantic without it feeling overly formal.
And who said romantic dates had to be in the evening? There’s something to be said for spending the morning together, and the bakery at La Motte is perfect for slower breakfasts or lighter lunches, especially if you can grab a table outside. Think flaky pastries, excellent coffee, fresh bread, and getting to see the winelands in that gorgeous golden morning light.
If you’re after something more elevated, L’Ami Family Brasserie is ideal for a proper Winelands lunch. The menu leans into seasonal local ingredients and beautifully plated dishes that pair naturally with the estate’s wines.
Creation Wines
Creation feels made for long afternoons together. The estate sits high up in Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, and the views across the valley are spectacular. Huge windows make the restaurant feel connected to the landscape outside, especially during golden hour. They’re also a blessing in the wet Cape winters, where you can enjoy the view and settle in with award-winning wines while feeling safe and sheltered from the elements outside.
The food-and-wine pairing experience here is one of the best in the Winelands – and yes, that includes all of the top Franschhoek restaurants! Dishes are designed specifically around the wines, with beautifully presented plates that often include fresh local seafood, seasonal vegetables, or rich meats balanced by the freshness of the cool-climate wines.
“You arrive thinking you’ll stay an hour,” I always warn people, “and then suddenly it’s sunset.”
There’s something incredibly peaceful about the atmosphere here. It never feels rushed or overcrowded, which makes it especially good for couples wanting to properly slow down.
Delaire Graff Estate
If you want dramatic scenery and full luxury, Delaire Graff is difficult to beat.
Perched high on the Helshoogte Pass, which I think might be one of the most beautiful roads in the Winelands, the estate overlooks the Banhoek Valley. Between the gardens, sculptures, wine tastings, and beautifully designed restaurants, it’s a really special setting for memorable date nights or even engagements. So if you want to pop the question, definitely keep this in mind!
It would be easy for the food to under-deliver against the spectacular views, but the dining experiences here live up to the hype too. From the main restaurant, expect beautifully plated contemporary dishes, exceptional wine pairings, and one of the most impressive terraces in the area. For something even more unique, you could always opt for Hoseki, the fine-dining Japanese omakase experience run by Virgil Kahn.
“It feels like one of those places people picture when they imagine a high end, luxury South African wine estate,” I always think when I visit, but it’s almost part art gallery, part wine farm.

Benguela Cove
Benguela Cove is quite different to the traditional Cape wine farm experience because of its lagoon setting. The combination of water, mountains, and cool-climate vineyards creates an atmosphere that feels calmer and more coastal than Stellenbosch or Franschhoek.
Honestly, even if you just sat there with a glass of wine and looked at the view for three hours, it would still feel worth the drive. And there’s something about a calming water view that encourages conversation, if you ask me!
But not everyone wants to lounge around with a glass of wine for a few hours, so luckily, the estate also works really well for couples wanting more than just a tasting. You can do lagoon cruises, wine safaris, or long lunches overlooking the water.
Food-wise, the more refined restaurant focuses heavily on fresh seafood and lighter coastal-style dishes that suit both the setting and the cool-climate wines beautifully. This is a perfect summer spot for seafood and sauvignon!
Babylonstoren
What would a winelands list be without Babylonstoren? It feels almost dreamlike the first time you visit.
The gardens are extraordinary, and the entire estate is built around slowing down and appreciating simple things done beautifully. Couples can wander through orchards and vegetable gardens, browse the farm shop, book spa treatments, or settle into lunch at Babel at Babylonstoren.
The food here is deeply connected to the gardens themselves. Menus change according to what’s harvested that day, with vibrant seasonal vegetables, fresh breads, farm cheeses, and beautifully simple dishes that somehow still feel luxurious. Babel was once named ‘the best hotel breakfast in the world’ by Conde Nast Traveler in the US – and one look at the harvest table alone makes it immediately clear why.
I also think Babylonstoren works especially well for overnight stays because the property becomes even more magical once the day visitors leave. For something special, do their wine cellar tour and pairing, where you’ll taste the full range of wines in the underground cellar with farm bites including macadamia nuts, handmade chocolate, farm cheeses, and more.
Ready for Your Own Winelands Love Story?
Ultimately, anywhere in the Cape Winelands works well for couples. But in my opinion, the best experiences usually aren’t the rushed tasting routes or packed itineraries. They’re the moments spent with your favourite person where the wine keeps flowing and neither of you are in a hurry to head home just yet.
If you’ve been dreaming about a romantic escape, a special anniversary trip, or even just a weekend where you can properly switch off together, the Cape Winelands should be right at the top of your list. From long lunches in Franschhoek to cool-climate wine tastings in Hemel-en-Aarde, there’s no shortage of unforgettable moments waiting just outside Cape Town.
