There’s a reason Thailand continues to be a firm favourite with South African travellers. With those dreeeeaaaamy islands, colourful street markets, golden temples, and food that rivals anywhere on the planet, it’s no wonder Thailand sparks wanderlust in us all. And of course, there’s also the fact that it’s one of the most affordable holiday destinations out there.

Here’s your Thailand bucket list for 2025, which has everything you need to know about both the iconic stops and the off-the-beaten-path gems. Use it to help you plan – or daydream about – the perfect Thai holiday, whether you’re a White Lotus-style traveller or a backpacking adventurer.

Must-See Places in Thailand

It’s only logical to begin your journey in Bangkok, a city that truly never sleeps. The Thai capital is bold, energetic, and full of surprises. Take time to visit the Grand Palace and Wat Arun, particularly around sunset when the temple glows gold across the river. For a peek into daily life, hop on a long-tail boat and explore the canal networks that branch off from the Chao Phraya River. And if you’re there over the weekend, Chatuchak Market is a must—it’s one of the biggest and most exciting markets in the world.

From there, fly south to Phuket. We’ve all heard of Thailand’s largest island, which has become one of the most popular holiday destinations for South Africans. Known for its powdery beaches and buzzing nightlife, it’s also the gateway destination to some really fun day trips. Spend a day exploring Phang Nga Bay by boat, or head to the famous Phi Phi Islands for that true postcard view that you’ve seen splashed all over social media.

For something a little less beach and a little more jungle, Chiang Mai in the north offers a slower pace and cooler air. You’ll find ancient temples, local night markets, and a strong focus on wellness and culture. It’s also one of the best places to visit ethical elephant sanctuaries.

Lastly, Koh Samui offers barefoot luxury in an unhurried setting. Think palm-fringed beaches, waterfall hikes, sunset beach bars, and yoga retreats tucked into the stillness of coconut groves. If you're dreaming of a holiday where you can properly unwind, this is it.

Must-Do Experiences in Thailand

One of the best things about Thailand is that it’s a place where you can do as much or as little as you like. For people who want to lie around on a beach, there’s plenty of opportunity to chill at sprawling resorts and enjoy the scenery.

But if you want a little more exploration, you certainly won’t be bored. One minute you could be weaving through Bangkok traffic in a tuk-tuk. The next, learning how to make green curry in a countryside cooking class. Make sure you leave space in your itinerary for a traditional Thai massage, and take time to visit one of Thailand’s floating markets, like the famous Damnoen Saduak.

Nature lovers should consider an overnight stay in Khao Sok National Park, home to emerald lakes and towering limestone cliffs. It’s a less touristy, more tranquil side of Thailand. Up north, catch a traditional Lanna dance show or explore mountain villages around Chiang Mai. And if nightlife is your thing, a night out in Patong is never dull.

The Thai Food You Have to Try

Thai food is one of the many reasons people fall in love with this country. You’ll eat well whether you’re at a five-star resort or a roadside stall. Pad Thai is a classic, of course, but just stick to the stuff you’ve seen on your local takeout menu. Otherwise, you might miss out on the famous spicy papaya salad, or Tom Yum Goong, a hot and sour prawn soup packed with lemongrass and chilli. Green curry is another favourite which you’re probably familiar with. Done right, it’s spicy, rich, and fragrant. And no meal here is complete without a plate of Mango Sticky Rice, especially if you're lucky enough to be there in mango season.

Street food is part of the fun. From satay skewers to crispy spring rolls and sweet Thai iced tea, you’ll want to try a bit of everything. Feeling adventurous? Fried insects are a novelty at local night markets if you’re up for a dare. Look for street market stalls packed with locals and you’re pretty much guaranteed great food.

Where to Stay in Thailand

Accommodation in Thailand suits every kind of traveller. If you’re after a resort experience with plenty of extras, Phuket has resorts galore. Flight Centre has some incredible deals on everything from family-friendly all-inclusive stays through to luxury adult-only options and everything in between. Can’t decide? The Outrigger boutique stay is always popular, and includes a (responsible!) elephant outing too.

If you’re eyeing up Koh Samui and want something super luxurious, Melati Beach Resort & Spa is a five star resort on the secluded Thongson Bay with all the opulent touches you could think of, including private pool villas and direct beach access.

Expert tip

Grab a famous coconut ice cream to beat the heat. Served in a coconut husk and a variety of toppings, this is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Best Time to Visit Thailand

Thailand is a year-round destination, but weather patterns can shape your experience. The peak season is between November and February, when temperatures are cooler and rainfall is rare. If you want to be out and about, this is when you’ll be guaranteed sunshine.

March to May gets hot, especially inland, so it’s perfect for beach holidays if you don’t mind the heat. The rainy season from June to October brings dramatic showers, but they’re usually short-lived and the crowds are thinner, so it can be a budget-friendly time to go.

For the best of both worlds, aim for April–June or September–October, when prices drop and you can still catch some sunshine between the rain.

Ideal Length of Stay

To get the full Thailand experience, two weeks is the sweet spot. That gives you time to explore a major city (like Bangkok), spend a few days in the north (Chiang Mai), and still unwind on a beach (Phuket or Koh Samui).

If you’re sticking to one destination, plan for at least 7–10 days so you can settle in, get over the jet lag, and enjoy your adventure fully.

Expert Tips from Flight Centre

We asked Ferdi Bornman, Team Leader at our Sandton store, for his Thailand must-knows:

"Respect local customs—especially when visiting temples. Cover your shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering.”

“Pre-book major attractions and tours in advance, especially if you’re travelling over peak season or public holidays.”

“Carry small cash notes for market shopping, street food, or tuk-tuks—but use your card for bigger purchases. ATMs are easy to find in cities.”

Rand to Thai Baht

At the time of writing, R1 = approximately 1.90 Thai Baht. It’s best to check the exchange rate just before you travel. Having a currency conversion app on hand can also be useful for quick calculations at markets or restaurants.
