Which country is best to visit in Southeast Asia?

Each country has its own appeal and the best country to visit depends on what you’re looking for. Thailand holidays are ideal for first-timers to Asia, and Thailand is also a great choice if you’re new to international travel in general.

There are plenty of flights, lots of accommodation options, and a good mix of culture, food, and beaches. Vietnam holidays are a little more adventurous and make a perfect option for travellers who want somewhere slightly more off the beaten path.

You can enjoy history, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and a street food scene to rival Thailand’s. Cambodia trips are centred around Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh’s gorgeous temples and ruins, which are truly breathtaking.

Another option is Malaysia, which gives you a good mix of buzzing cities (we’re looking at you, Kuala Lumpur!) and tropical beaches and islands. It’s modern, first-world, and often an overlooked holiday destination when it comes to Southeast Asia.

When is the best time to travel to Southeast Asia?

The dry season (November to April) is generally the most popular, but some areas (like Bali or Vietnam’s central coast) have different weather patterns. It’s important to plan around the weather in Southeast Asia as monsoon season often sees very heavy rain and could make it difficult to see the sights you’re dreaming of.

If you want to save money and avoid crowds, consider travelling just outside peak season – usually known as shoulder season. Your Flight Centre Travel Expert will be able to guide you in terms of weather, price, peak seasons, and all of the other little details so you find travel dates that work.

What To Do with One Week in Southeast Asia

If you only have a week, it’s generally best to focus on one country rather than trying to cover too much. That way, you can enjoy your time instead of rushing to airports or train stations.

Thailand: Most Thailand holidays start with 3 days in Bangkok to see the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and the floating markets. Then spend 4 days on the islands soaking up the sun. You can pick whichever you like, but Koh Samui or Krabi are easy to reach and packed with beautiful beaches.

Vietnam: Many Vietnam holidays begin with 2 days in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, 2 days on an overnight Ha Long Bay boat trip, and 3 days in Ho Chi Minh City, where you can visit the War Remnants Museum and try amazing street food. You could also trade one or two nights in Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi for time in Hoi An, depending on your priorities.

Cambodia: Popular Cambodia holidays include 4 days in Siem Reap exploring Angkor Wat and 3 days in Phnom Penh for the Royal Palace and National Museum. Many people choose to visit Cambodia for only around 3 days and combine it with Vietnam instead, which is an option if you have around 10 days.

Two Weeks in Southeast Asia

With two weeks, you can explore two countries at a slower pace or get a well-rounded overview of one.

Thailand and Cambodia: One good option is to spend 5 days in Bangkok and northern Thailand (including Chiang Mai), then 4 days in Siem Reap, and 3 days in Phnom Penh.

Vietnam and Laos: A classic Asia holiday pairs 5 days in northern Vietnam (Hanoi and Ha Long Bay), 4 days in Luang Prabang for Buddhist temples and Kuang Si Waterfall, and 5 days in central Vietnam (Hoi An and Hue).

Indonesia and Malaysia: Spend 7 days in Bali exploring Ubud and the beaches, followed by 6 days between Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia’s east coast islands.

Keep your eyes peeled for restaurants with high service taxes as it can add up quickly and they don't all charge the same.

One Month in Southeast Asia

A month-long trip gives you time to cover several countries in a loop.

Classic Loop: Start with 7 days in Thailand (Bangkok and northern Thailand), then cross into Laos for 5 days in Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng. Continue with 10 days in Vietnam, from Hanoi and Ha Long Bay to Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City. Next, spend 3-5 days in Cambodia exploring Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh. End with a few days in Bali for a mix of temples, jungles, rice terraces, yoga retreats, and beach time. After all, you’ll want to spend some time chilling and making sure you return home feeling like you had a holiday with some downtime and much-needed R&R.

This kind of Southeast Asia itinerary works well with regional flights. Flights to Asia are easy to book in advance, and budget airlines connect most major cities so it’s easy to get around once you’ve touched down in a major Southeast Asian hub.

Travel Tips for Southeast Asia

  • Budgeting: You can travel Southeast Asia for around R20 000 per month, depending on how often you fly and your accommodation style. However, it is very affordable if you eat local food and stay in mid-range hotels.
  • Packing: Pack light if you’re moving around a lot. Asia can be hot and humid, so choose clothes that can be washed and dried quickly, and which are breathable. You’ll also want to pack clothes which cover your shoulders and knees as many temples enforce a dress code.
  • Safety: Southeast Asia is generally safe for first-time travellers, especially if you stick to popular routes and tours.
  • Tours: Joining a guided trip is a great way to maximise time and meet other travellers. Browse Southeast Asia tours or multi-country group trips for inspiration.
