Qatar is possibly one of the best stopover destinations in the world. It’s earned it’s place alongside Istanbul and Singapore for good reason.

Whether you're in transit on your way to Europe or the UK, or planning a longer stay, there’s plenty to see and do in this exciting, modern Middle Eastern gem. Here’s why Qatar should be on your travel bucket list – for at least a couple of days.

Where to Go in Qatar

Qatar may be small, but it offers diverse regions to explore, from ultra-modern cities to historic desert landscapes. Doha, the capital and heart of Qatar, is a thriving metropolis known for its glittering skyline, luxury hotels, and cultural landmarks. It’s where most visitors begin their journey, and with good reason—Doha is packed with world-class attractions.

Although many visitors stick just to Doha, there’s plenty more to see too. The Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid) is a must-visit natural wonder. This UNESCO-recognised site, located near the Saudi border, is a breathtaking desert-meets-ocean landscape that can only be reached by 4x4. And if you’re looking for a coastal escape, The Pearl-Qatar is a man-made island featuring Mediterranean-style marinas, upscale shopping, and waterfront dining. It’s Qatar’s answer to Palm Jumeirah in Dubai.

What to Do While You’re There

If you’re into motorsport, Qatar is the place to be. The Qatar Grand Prix happens every December at the Lusail International Circuit, turning the city into an F1 hotspot. The world’s best drivers compete on this high-speed track, and whether you’re watching from the stands or soaking up the atmosphere in the city, it’s an unmissable event. Not to be outdone, the Qatar MotoGP sees the fastest riders in the world take over the track, bringing two-wheel adrenaline to Doha.

If fast and furious isn’t your style, Qatar has plenty of cultural and leisure activities to offer – at a much slower pace than the Grand Prix or MotoGP!

The Katara Cultural Village is a must-visit for art lovers, showcasing open-air theatres, galleries, and stunning traditional architecture. The Pearl-Qatar is where you’ll find waterfront luxury at its finest, with designer stores, high-end dining, and an exclusive marina. No visit to Qatar is complete without exploring Souq Waqif, a historic marketplace where you can wander through alleyways filled with spices, textiles, and handcrafted treasures. The National Museum of Qatar is an absolute must. Its striking architecture alone is worth the visit, but inside, you’ll find immersive exhibits that trace Qatar’s journey from a Bedouin trading hub to a modern metropolis.

A traditional dhow cruise along the coastline gives you a picture-perfect view of Doha’s skyline from the water, while Aspire Park is the ideal spot for a relaxing walk or picnic among greenery.

If you’re looking for modern shopping rather than Souq Waqif, Villaggio Mall brings a touch of Venice to the desert, with high-end stores lining indoor canals (yes, gondolas included). Think of it as Qatar’s answer to Montecasino!

And of course, no trip to Qatar would be complete without a desert safari. Racing over dunes in a 4x4, riding a camel, and enjoying a traditional Bedouin meal under the stars are all experiences you won’t forget.

What to Eat in Qatar

Middle Eastern food is famously good, and Qatari cuisine is no different. There might not be many Qatari restaurants knocking around in South Africa but trust us when we say the meals are a literal feast of bold flavours and Middle Eastern influences.

Machboos, a fragrant spiced rice dish often served with lamb or seafood, is a national favourite, while harees, a slow-cooked wheat and meat dish, is a comforting homestyle must-try. Pair your meal with a cup of karak tea, a sweet and spiced local favourite, or get your caffeine kick from some traditional Arabic coffee paired with fresh dates.

If fine dining is more your scene, Doha also has a selection of Michelin-starred restaurants in some of the city’s most luxurious settings.

When to Go

For the best experience, plan your visit between November and March when the weather is pleasantly warm, making outdoor sightseeing and desert adventures more enjoyable. December is particularly exciting, with the Qatar Grand Prix bringing an extra buzz to the city. Summers, on the other hand, can be intensely hot, with temperatures soaring above 40°C. Good thing they have air conditioning at most attractions and restaurants!

How Long Should You Stay?

If you’re using Qatar only as a stopover, then a two- to three-day visit is perfect for exploring Doha’s highlights, enjoying a bit of luxury, and getting a taste of Qatari culture. But if you’re keen to explore beyond the city, a five- to seven-day trip allows more time for desert safaris, day trips to Al Zubarah Fort, and unique experiences like a traditional dhow cruise along the coastline.
