Here’s how to plan an unforgettable trip that’s big on beauty but easy on the wallet.

Planning a holiday to Greece doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune. With a practically perfect mix of ancient history, island life, turquoise waters, and delicious Greek cuisine on offer, Greece is one of those European countries that truly has something for everyone. Yes, even if you’re watching your budget.

Why Greece is such great value

The value of a Greece holiday isn’t just in how far the rand stretches, but in the kinds of experiences you get for each rand. In addition to being affordable, Greece also offers incredible variety. There are big cities and archaeological sites alongside tiny idyllic islands and everything from beachside cottages to fancy resorts, so it’s a destination that caters well to different travel styles.

You’ll find a wide range of Greece holiday packages that combine flights, accommodation and sometimes transfers or day tours, offering real value for money. Travelling in the shoulder season (around May or October) can also save you a bundle, while still letting you enjoy warm weather and blue-sky days.

For an overview of what makes Greece so special, visit Flight Centre’s Greece travel guide.

How to find affordable packages and flights

If you want to keep things simple (and cost-effective, of course!) then booking a Greece holiday package through Flight Centre is a great start. These packages often include flights, hotels, and sometimes extras like transfers or tours. So not only do you save money by bundling everything, but you also save loads of time researching and booking. And you know what they say: time is money!

If you want to island hop, take a look at Greek Islands holiday deals and do some research into island hopping cruises or itineraries. You can choose between popular spots like Santorini and Mykonos or smaller, less-touristy islands for even better value.

When it comes to flights, compare options with different airlines and points of arrival and departure. Flying into Athens is often the cheapest way to start your trip, and from there, ferries connect you to most major islands. Travelling mid-week or outside peak season can also make a big difference in price, and you might even have some luck by combining Greece with another country like Turkey and flying into or out of Istanbul. Your travel expert can help you find the best options but, like always, being flexible is the first step to saving some cash while travelling.

Budget-friendly destinations in Greece

Once you’ve sorted your budget flights, how do you save money while you’re actually there? Luckily, Greece has plenty of affordable spots, even for your South African bank account. Here’s where you shouldn’t miss.

Athens and the mainland

Start in Athens, where ancient and modern life meet in one energetic city. Wander through the Acropolis, enjoy street food in Monastiraki, or join a local wine tasting. It’s a fantastic base for history lovers and a great place to spend your first few days before heading out to the islands.

From Athens, you can plan day trips to ancient sites like Delphi or rent a car to explore at your own pace. You’ll get a taste of Greece’s rich history without having to spend too much.

The old city is gorgeous, but more expensive. Luckily, Athens is quite walkable – so try staying and eating just outside the most touristy areas to keep your wallet happy.

The islands

When people picture Greece, they usually think of white houses, blue domes and sunsets over the sea. And yes, you can experience all that affordably. Our Greek Islands travel guide is a great starting point to see what’s available.

For value, look to the larger islands or those a little off the main tourist track:

  • Crete offers incredible beaches, ancient ruins and plenty of small local villages to explore. Being one of the largest islands, it’s great value for money.
  • Paros, Naxos, and Syros are quieter Cyclades islands with affordable hotels and great beaches.
  • Santorini is iconic but can be pricey in peak months. If you really want to go, visit outside summer for cheaper stays and fewer crowds.
  • Mykonos has vibrant nightlife but also smaller, more relaxed spots if you know where to look.

Island-hopping can also be done on a budget. Ferries are efficient and frequent, and you can mix one well-known island with a smaller one to balance cost and experience.

Money-saving travel tips

A few small decisions can make a big difference to your Greece holiday budget:

  • Travel off-peak – late May to early June or September to October offer great weather and lower prices.
  • Stay slightly inland – hotels a short walk from the beach or in nearby villages can cost less than half of beachfront properties.
  • Eat like a local – Greek tavernas serve some of the best meals at local prices. Try grilled seafood, olive oil-dressed salads and homemade baklava.
  • Use ferries, not flights – ferries between islands are scenic, affordable and part of the adventure.
  • Hire a car for a few days – if you’re travelling as a group or family, car hire can be cheaper than multiple taxis or tours.
  • Bring your essentials – sunscreen, insect repellent and bottled water can be pricier on small islands.
  • Book early – popular destinations sell out months ahead, especially in summer, and early-bird packages often have the best rates.

A simple 7-10 day Greece itinerary

If it’s your first trip, a week to ten days is the sweet spot for balancing sightseeing and relaxation.

Days 1–2: Athens
Arrive in Athens and spend a few days exploring the city’s famous landmarks, markets and neighbourhoods. The Acropolis is a must, but don’t miss a sunset view from Lycabettus Hill.

Days 3–4: First island stop
Take a ferry to a smaller island for a slower pace and great value. Stay in a charming village, swim in the Aegean, and enjoy fresh seafood by the water.

Days 5–7: A larger island or second stop
Hop to a bigger island like Crete or Santorini for the postcard moments. Keep it short if you’re watching your spend, and stay slightly outside the main tourist areas.

Days 8–10: Back to the mainland
Return to Athens or add a night somewhere new on the mainland. Explore local markets, pick up souvenirs like olive oil or honey, and toast your trip with a glass of Greek wine.

This combination gives you beaches, history and island life – all without needing a luxury budget.
