Mozambique: A Nearby Alternative to Indian Ocean Islands

For diving enthusiasts, Mozambique is a haven. The coral reefs are teeming with marine life, including dolphins, whale sharks, manta rays, and even the elusive dugong. The Bazaruto Archipelago, in particular, is renowned for its marine life. But truth be told, you can get good snorkelling and diving all over Mozambique.

It’s true that South Africa is hard to beat when it comes to wildlife on land, so we’re not suggesting you do a full-on safari. But although the Indian Ocean islands offer some pretty cool animals (lemurs, anyone?!) Mozambique has plenty to see too. On land, Gorongosa National Park offers an opportunity to witness diverse wildlife, from lions and elephants to rare bird species. Then there’s Niassa Reserve in the north, which is one of the largest protected areas in Africa. It’s not the typical sandy Mozambique you’re picturing. Instead, think miombo woodlands and plenty of wildlife, including endangered African wild dogs. Mozambique also boasts beautiful forests and mountain ranges, like the Chimanimani Mountains. 

Mozambique’s cultural heritage is infused with African, Arab, and Portuguese influences dating back centuries. There’s colonial-era buildings and architecture, a lively music scene infused with African and Portuguese influences, and some seriously good offerings on the food front. Let’s face it, food is one of the main reasons we love Mozambique. Fresh seafood is a highlight, with prawns, crayfish, and calamari readily available. If you’re eating them on the beach, even better! But there’s also Matapa, a traditional dish made from cassava leaves, ground peanuts, and coconut milk. And of course there’s the famous peri-peri chicken, a nod to the Portuguese heritage of Mozambique.
