Mauritius Bucket List: Your Perfect Island Escape

If there’s one thing about Mauritius, it’s that you’ll immediately feel yourself taking a big, slow exhale the moment you land. Rest and relaxation? Guaranteed. The white-sand beaches, turquoise lagoons, and pretty volcanic peaks make it picture-perfect, for sure. But this little Indian Ocean paradise is more than that.

For South Africans, the unique Mauritian mix of cultures, flavours, and experiences keeps travellers coming back year after year. Well….that, and that it’s one of the easiest escapes for South Africans thanks to short flights and no visa hassles.

Plus, we love that there’s a resort for every kind of traveller and every kind of holiday. Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, a family holiday, or a once-in-a-lifetime celebration, Mauritius will deliver.

So, here’s everything you need to know for your bucket list trip to Mauritius.

Must-See Places

Start in Port Louis, where the Central Market gives you a sensory overload (in the best way!) of spices, textiles, and snacks before you stroll down to the Caudan Waterfront. Inland, the Chamarel region is a must, thanks to the Seven Coloured Earths, cascading waterfall, and rum tastings. After all, you need to see all sides of the island culture!

Offshore, Île aux Cerfs is a tropical postcard with its white sand, water sports, and famous golf course. For something wilder, Black River Gorges National Park spreads out in every shade of green, with waterfalls and hiking trails that make you feel miles from your resort – in case you want to see a different side of island life. And for nightlife, restaurants, and lagoon swims, Grand Baie on the north coast is always buzzing.

And of course, the other must-see places are your hotel’s pool, beach, and air-conditioned suite!

Must-Eat Foods

Mauritian cuisine is a mix of Indian, Creole, French, and Chinese influences, so the variety is incredible. Look out for dholl puri, the island’s favourite street food, and tangy fish vindaye cooked with turmeric and mustard seeds. Gateaux piments (which are spicy lentil fritters) are addictive little snacks too. And of course, fresh seafood is a must whenever you’re on an island holiday!

Wash it all down with a frosty bottle of Phoenix beer or an alouda, a sweet milk-based drink that’s perfect on a hot day. Or opt for your hotel’s signature cocktail.

Must-Do Experiences

A day out on a catamaran cruise is almost a rite of passage, complete with snorkelling stops and dolphin sightings. Golfers should pack their clubs for rounds at Heritage Golf Club or Paradis Golf Club, both ranked among the best courses in the Indian Ocean.

The island’s reefs are ideal for diving or snorkelling, while rum distilleries and old sugar estates let you taste another side of Mauritius. And don’t skip a spa day. It might seem crazy to be inside in such a gorgeous country, but it’s particularly good for couples. Lots of the resorts design treatments and packages with couples in mind, so you can finish an afternoon of massages with cocktails on the beach.

Best Time to Visit

Mauritius is a year-round destination. From May to October, the weather is dry and cooler, which is perfect if you’re planning to hike or play golf. From December to March, the days are hotter with warm waters. That makes them ideal for lazy swims and long beach days, but you might get some afternoon showers. Just be aware that December is peak season for South African travellers in particular.

Where to Stay

Mauritius has a resort for every kind of traveller. The Attitude range of hotels have different focuses depending on your interests, and foodies will be in heaven at The Ravenala while couples or honeymooners might enjoy the adults-only Lagoon Attitude.

If you want a family friendly escape without sacrificing style, the 4.5-star Radisson Blu Azuri is a great pick. And did you know that you can even self cater in Mauritius at Domaine de Grande Baie.

And if you want to have someone else do all the research so you to focus purely on sun, sea, and relaxation, you’ll find no shortage of Mauritius holiday packages that roll flights, meals, and transfers into one with Flight Centre.

Ideal Length of Stay

Give yourself at least seven nights to balance relaxation with a few excursions. A lot of the best value packages are designed around a week-long stay, too.

But if you’d like to dive deeper into the island and explore outside of your resort, whether that’s golf, hiking, or hopping to Rodrigues, plan for 10 to 12 nights. After all, nobody has ever wished they spent less time soaking up island bliss!

Expert Tips

We asked Travel Expert Lerissa Govender from Hilton Flight Centre to spill her best insider secrets for trips to Mauritius. Here’s what she said:

  • The all-inclusive meal basis is highly recommended. Some resorts even pack a basket for you, so you don't miss out on lunch if you leave the resort for an outing or excursion.
  • Aqua shoes are great to pack for walks on the beach, or going into the water. Some areas have sharp coral and these protect your feet from scrapes and cuts.
  • Always pack sunscreen and insect repellent.

Expert tip

•Many airlines don't have personal screens or inflight entertainment, so it's important to pack a book or have something downloaded before you fly!
