Here are the top 10 hidden gems in Johannesburg that go beyond the usual recommendations. Even if you’ve lived here your whole life, there are probably a few on this list you don’t know about. And of course, you need to visit them all!

1. Northcliff Ridge Ecopark

The suburb of Northcliff is somewhere we mostly think of as residential and retail, but the Northcliff Ridge Ecopark offers one of the highest viewpoints in Johannesburg. The sunsets from here are nothing short of spectacular, but the spot is made super special by how quiet and tranquil it is. And of course, we’re always big fans of anything free or cheap to do in Jozi.

On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Magaliesberg Mountains. Despite its stunning vistas, Northcliff Ridge remains relatively under the radar. The secret is out now, so go and take your loved one for sunset photos before everyone knows about it!

2. Lindfield Victorian House Museum

Step back in time at the Lindfield Victorian House Museum, a meticulously preserved Victorian-era home. Owned and operated by Katherine Love, this living museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the domestic life of Johannesburg’s early settlers. The guided tours, led by Love herself, are rich with historical anecdotes and insights into the Victorian lifestyle. The museum's authenticity and attention to detail make it a must-visit for history enthusiasts.

3. Johannesburg Heritage Foundation Walking Tours

Johannesburg is a city rich in history, but most of us only see it from our cars – or from the few malls or restaurants we venture out to. How about making like a tourist and exploring it on foot with the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation? It’s a fun day out which offers a new perspective even for those familiar with Jozi streets. The foundation’s walking tours give you a glimpse into the city’s architectural and cultural history, uncovering stories of Johannesburg’s past that are often overlooked.

If you have little boys in the family who are obsessed with trains and cars, they’ll remember it for years!

5. Gerakaris Family Wines

Who says wineries are only for Capetonians? In Craighall Park, you’ll find Gerakaris Family Wines; a unique urban winery that brings the art of winemaking to the city. Founded by winemaker Kath Gerakaris, this boutique winery is known for its focus on producing exceptional wines from grapes sourced from the Elgin Valley, a cool-climate region renowned for its high-quality fruit.

What makes Gerakaris Family Wines special is the urban setting combined with a hands-on, small-batch approach to winemaking. Visitors to the winery can enjoy personalized wine tastings in a leafy courtyard which feels miles away from the city.

6. Sanctuary Mandela

This intimate boutique hotel has just nine rooms, all decorated in tones of Springbok green. It was once home to Nelson Mandela, and there are all kinds of personal touches from his life on display in the hotel. In the suburb of Houghton, it’s just up the road from Rosebank’s nightlife. But a better suggestion is to start with the tour of the hotel, where the staff will give you a bit of history into the house and Mandela’s life. Then, spend the evening eating at the on-site Insights restaurant, which is run by Madiba’s former personal chef and has a limited menu of some of the former President’s favourite dishes. Then, linger for the Sunday morning brunch and jazz performance.
