A little bit about Morocco

Situated in North Africa with coasts on the Mediterranean and Atlantic Seas, Morocco is combined influences from Berber, Arabic and European cultures. From the vibrant souks of Marrakech and the medinas in Fez to the Sahara Desert and the magical landscapes of the Atlas Mountains, Morocco has a unique blend of history, diverse culture, majestic scenery and the most delicious cuisine. It’s a colourful and vibrant country and if not already, should be on your bucket list.

Why G Adventures?

I had the opportunity to go on the ultimate adventure from the North down to the South with G Adventures, and I could not imagine a better way to see Morocco.

G Adventures are the leaders in small group travel and have been for over 30 years. They have flexible itineraries with more freedom to explore. The tour guides are all local and are labelled CEO's "Chief Experience Officers" - they were given this name to reflect how integral they are to your travel experience.

Apart from this, the hotels they chose for our trip were all amazing, with some of them really leaving us all speechless.

All of the experiences that G chose for us to do along the way were so well thought out. We got to experience a little bit of everything, so it was the perfect balance. I know for a fact that had I gone to Morrocco on my own, I would never have seen and experienced the things that I did with G Adventures.

A few things that stand out and set G Adventures apart:

  • G for Good: Acting responsibility and creating a positive impact on the places they visit which helps fuel community tourism
  • Planterra: Non-profit partner that he's to ensure communities benefit from tourism that G Adventures touch
  • Trees for days: For every day of your tour, G Adventures plants a tree in your name which helps communities adapt to climate changes

Highlights from my Moroccan adventure

Chefchaouen, The “Blue City”

Chefchaouen, also known as "the blue city" is covered in the most beautiful picturesque alleys with different shades of blue in every direction you look. It looks like a scene out of a movie set. Once you hit the square, you can walk around and shop while there is live entertainment or choose to watch from the terrace of one of the many cute little restaurants.

Fun Fact: it is believed that one of the reasons for painting the buildings blue is to repel mosquitos and keep homes cool during hot summers.

Fez

This was where we got to learn more about G Adventures and Planterra which was such a humbling experience. We got to meet some of the women that are in the program and enjoy a traditional home-cooked Moroccan meal made by them. The program allows them to support their families and access healthcare and education.

The Sahara Desert and Merzouga Desert Camp

There is something magical about the sea of sand. We made our way to the Sahara Desert Camp as the sun set and the sky started to glimmer with stars, then spent the evening by the campfire as local musicians entertained us - we even joined in and danced around the fire. This was such a soul-enriching experience.

Rissani

On the way to Tinghir we stopped for lunch at a local home where we tried home-made Medfouna, also known as "Berber pizza" or "desert pizza", it is traditionally prepared from a round-shaped dough that is stuffed with meat and veggies, soft inside and crispy outside - it’s a must try and the people of Rissani do it best.

Middle Atlas Mountains

We had the ultimate foodie moment in the Middle Atlas Mountains; lunch with a Berber Family in the garden. This was after a scenic hike in the mountains, and we were all starving at this point. The most delicious and largest dates I have ever seen were served to us followed by dish after dish and live entertainment that had us all smiling from ear to ear.

Marrakesh

  • We got to join a hands-on cooking class with a renowned Moroccan chef in Marrakech. We learned how to roll semolina and measure out spices to make tagine which we all sat together and enjoyed for lunch afterwards. The tagine in Morrocco is so divine and each region has their unique touch. You won't get tired of eating it every day.
  • I opted for an optional activity on the last day of the tour: hot air ballooning over the Red City and Marrakech desert with 360-degree views of the High Atlas Mountains followed with breakfast, traditional Moroccan tea and we even got a certificate at the end. It was a beautiful experience that I highly recommend.
  • Shopping!!! You need to visit the Souks where you can shop to your heart’s content. Clothing, spices, souvenirs and the famous Moroccan lanterns - the options are endless. We visited Marakesh last where the Souks are on another level, so we filled up those last few kilograms in our bags with goodies before heading home.

One thing that for sure flows through to each city are the most beautiful architectural buildings (mosques, palaces, museums and ordinary houses) covered in handmade clay tiles with geometric patterns and colours which we got the opportunity to go and see how they are made. l asked myself repeatedly, "how do the Moroccan’s get mixing all these patterns, textures and colours so right?". It's unbelievable.

So, if you have ever questioned whether or not Morrocco should be a part of your next holiday, the answer should be “yes, definitely!” If you are looking for a perfect balance between culture, architecture, friendly people, shopping, delicious food, beautiful landscapes and much more, then this vibrant country is the answer, and exploring it on a G Adventures Tour will undoubtedly complete your journey.
