A few weeks ago, Flight Centre’s Lisa Randall had the incredible opportunity to step onboard Norwegian Aqua, the highly anticipated first ship in Norwegian Cruise Line’s brand-new Prima Plus Class.

Lisa had experiences we all dream of when it comes to cruises; spoils and never-ending wining and dining choices onboard, to discovering the charming cobblestoned streets of Porto and the canals of Amsterdam on land.

Step Onboard: Norwegian Aqua’s Top Highlights

When you’re faced with something as shiny and new as Norwegian Aqua, it’s hard to know where to even start describing it. Here are (some of!) Lisa’s highlights from her time on board:

  • The Aqua Slidecoaster – This futuristic feature might be the first hybrid waterslide and rollercoaster at sea, and it looks every bit as fun as it sounds. “We didn’t get to ride it, but it’s definitely on my list for next time,” Lisa said.
  • 10-Story Dry Slide – Skip the lift and take the fast lane down ten decks. It’s exhilarating (and a great alternative to elevators when you're feeling bold).
  • Mandara Spa – A true sanctuary. Think steam rooms, ice rooms, salt and charcoal saunas, and even a two-storey indoor waterfall. It’s a gorgeous, luxury wellness retreat which you’ll never want to leave.
  • Food, food, and more food – One of Lisa’s favourite parts: “You’ll never go hungry on Aqua. Every cuisine is represented, and with so many included dining options through NCL’s ‘More at Sea,’ it’s easy to try something different every day.”
  • Multiple pools and hot tubs – You’re never far from water, whether it’s infinity pools, the main deck, or a tucked-away hot tub. Perfect for relaxing with a drink and taking in the view, or for letting the kids burn off some of their pent-up energy.
  • World-Class Entertainment – True to NCL’s reputation, the onboard entertainment was spectacular. Even without sailing, evenings on Aqua are unforgettable. There’s everything from live game shows to theatre productions, karaoke nights, pub quizzes, and so much more.
  • Spacious Cabins – “Our room was modern, comfortable, and had everything we needed,” Lisa said. “It felt more like a chic hotel than a cruise cabin.”

Expert tip

Always arrive the day before your cruise departs - Mother Nature is unpredictable and could impact whether your cruise needs to leave earlier.

European Gems: Porto and Amsterdam

Lisa’s trip didn’t end with the cruise. After all, why not take advantage of a flight to Europe and add on a little bit extra and explore on foot?

First stop: Porto, a city she now ranks as one of her favourites in the world. “Porto is charming, colourful, and filled with history. The steep, cobbled streets, port wine tastings, and views from the Douro River made it so memorable.” It’s also one of the more affordable European destinations, so is a great pick for South African travellers looking to add a pre or post cruise stop to extend their holiday.

From there, it was off to Amsterdam, where iconic canals, buzzing cafés, and centuries-old buildings were the flavour of the day. “Amsterdam was exactly what I imagined. It looks just like the photos with the bridges, bikes, and canals! It’s laid-back, photogenic, and full of personality.” And with direct flights thanks to KLM, it’s easier than ever to experience the Dutch capital firsthand.

10 Reasons why cruising with NCL ticks all the boxes

CHECK IT OUT

Why Cruising Is Worth It

One of Lisa’s biggest takeaways from the trip was the incredible value of cruising.

“I think a lot of people worry about the cost of cruising, but once you understand what’s included, it really adds up to great value. Cheap on the surface isn't always cheap in total” Lisa says.

“It’s like hotels on the outskirts of a city centre. They may be cheaper but work out how much you'll be paying for transport every day to get around. Usually, I say you should rather find an average 3 star hotel closer to the action so you can walk every day and discover new things around you. It’s the same with cruises! A cheaper cruise may look appealing - find out what's included. Food and beverages add up - especially when you're paying in dollars.”

With NCL’s More at Sea package, dining and drinks are covered at a variety of restaurants, so you can indulge without checking prices. That way you can rest assured that you won’t end up being hit with any big, unexpected bills. For anyone considering a cruise but not sure where to start, Lisa’s advice is simple: Go for it.

Experience It for Yourself

You can experience Norwegian Aqua for yourself when she sails to the Caribbean and Bermuda in 2025. Whether you’re in it for the thrills, the food, the entertainment, or the luxury spa days, Aqua delivers.
