London Destination Guide

London Holidays »

London is home to more than 8 million people from all over the globe – earning it the reputation of being the cultural capital of the world. Whether you visit London for its history and museums, or the theatre and iconic landmarks, the UK capital should be on every traveller’s itinerary. more »

Top Attractions »

London offers many famous attractions, and visitors have their pick of museums and art galleries. Take a tour of Westminster Abbey, the massive cathedral where the crowning of every English monarch has been held since the coronation of William the Conqueror in 1066. Visit the Tower of London – for nearly a millennium used as lodging for royals and a prison for doomed prisoners. Today the Tower of London houses the historic Crown Jewels of Queen Elizabeth and the British monarchy, and is open to the public as a museum.
Hop on a red double-decker bus and make the most of free visits to the British Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and the city’s grand parks. Ride the giant London Eye, climb to the top of St Paul’s Cathedral dome and grab discounted theatre tickets for night shows in Covent Garden. You’re not a real tourist until you’ve caught the Tube in the wrong direction at least once or had afternoon tea at the Ritz. more »

Where to Eat and Drink »

If you’ve heard rumours that English food is all bangers and mash, prepare to be astounded. In a city that is truly a mix of cultures and where more than 300 languages are spoken, you can expect establishments that cater for a great variety of tastes. From Michelin-star restaurants to pubs and street stalls, there’s never been a better time to try their tempting treats. This City is a foodie heaven and locals aren’t shy to book restaurant tables months in advance. When you find somewhere you’d really love to eat, book a table! It’s easier to cancel than regret not making that call.
Although Londoners may work hard, they play hard too. London offers everything any night owl could possibly want: from classic pubs to chic clubs, quirky dive bars, and theatres packed with Hollywood stars. more »

Where to Stay »

Many hotels are conveniently located near Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus or the Theatre District, but they tend to be more expensive than hotels further from the City centre. Do try less expensive options, but remember to weigh up savings against the cost of travelling back and forth to see the various sights. B&Bs are often tucked away in historic buildings, while serviced apartments may be a more suitable self-catering option when you’re travelling with your family. more »

Shopping »

Whether you’re shopping for big labels, or enjoy the exclusivity of boutiques, you’ll love shopping in London. Harrods and Fortnum & Mason are synonymous with established finery; while a handful of well-known markets are situated on Portobello Road, Camden, Greenwich, Brick Lane and Borough. The West End’s Oxford Street has more than 300 shops and most of the time the footpaths swell with bargain-hunting throngs seeking out big brand stores. more »

Good to know in London

  • London has the second largest population of South African expats in the Western world.
  • The beer isn’t really warm, it’s just not as cold as you may be used to.
  • If you’re spending more than a few days in London, get an Oyster card. This will give you access to the public transport network, and you can top it up as you go.
