Mexico City International Airport (MEX)

Metro Line 5 serves Terminal 1 via the Terminal Aérea station, with a ticket costing just M$5. It’s incredibly affordable and connects to the city’s wider subway network – transfer at Pantitlán for Line 1 toward downtown. 

Official prepaid taxis are recommended – buy a taxi coupon from the Transportación Terrestre booth in the arrivals area. Fares to central zones are approximately M$300–400 (around US$15–20). Ride-share services such as Uber and Didi also operate from designated pick-up areas in the parking garages. 

Multi-level parking garages at each terminal offer hourly and daily rates, with 24-hour security. 

Terminals 1 and 2 are about two kilometres apart. The Aerotrén shuttle train runs airside between the two every five minutes (boarding pass required). Free inter-terminal buses also operate landside around the clock. 

The Metrobús Line 4 (Airport Express) runs 24 hours from both terminals to Mexico City’s historic centre, including stops at San Lázaro and Centro. The fare is around M$30. 

Long-distance coach services depart from bus stations at both terminals, connecting MEX to cities like Puebla, Querétaro, Toluca, Cuernavaca and Veracruz. 

Major car rental agencies are available in the arrivals halls of both terminals. Talk to your Travel Expert about organising car hire for your trip or book it yourself online before you leave.

With over 35 airlines serving more than 165 destinations across five continents, MEX is one of Latin America’s best-connected airports. 

As a general rule, you should aim to arrive at Mexico City Airport at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. MEX is one of the busiest airports in Latin America and can get seriously congested, so giving yourself that extra buffer is always a good call. Mexico City Airport offers baby care rooms in the departure areas of both terminals, along with some play spaces near boarding gates. The airport is fully accessible with ramps, lifts and adapted restrooms. 

Keen to pick up some Mexican tequila, handicrafts or a last-minute souvenir? You’ll find duty-free stores in the international gate areas of both terminals, along with a wide range of shops and dining options. Check the airport’s website for an up-to-date directory of stores and their opening information. 

While last-minute sale fares to and from Mexico City Airport may become available, you’ll generally find it pays to plan ahead, especially if you’re booking international flights. As a rough guide, we recommend booking domestic flights three to six months in advance and international flights six to nine months before you plan to fly. When it comes to balancing flexible travel dates with the biggest savings, this should give you the best of both worlds!

There are plenty of transport options available from Mexico City Airport, including the Metro, the 24-hour Metrobús Line 4, prepaid taxis, ride-share services and long-distance buses. The Metro is the most affordable option, while prepaid taxis offer a safe, hassle-free journey into the city. 

Yes, Mexico City Airport has numerous lounges across both terminals, including the Admirals Club, United Club, Grand Lounge Elite, Centurion Club, Aeroméxico Salón Premier and VIPort Lounge. Most offer food, drinks, Wi-Fi and some have showers. Access may be possible depending on your ticket class, frequent flyer membership, lounge membership or by purchasing a day pass. Several of the airport’s lounges offer shower facilities and comfortable rest areas. Many restaurants in both terminals are open 24 hours, so you won’t go hungry during a late-night layover. There are also hotels located close to the airport for overnight stays.
