Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW)

SMART Bus route 125 provides public transport from both terminals’ Ground Transportation Centres to downtown Detroit, taking around 45–60 minutes. The fare is approximately $2 – a proper budget-friendly option. 

The Michigan Flyer/AirRide coach service connects DTW with Ann Arbor and other regional cities – handy if you’re heading further afield. 

All major car rental companies operate from DTW’s off-site Rental Car Centre, accessible by free shuttle bus from each terminal’s Ground Transportation area. Talk to your Travel Expert about organising car hire for your trip or book it yourself online before you leave. 

Taxis are available curbside at both terminals, with the journey to downtown Detroit taking around 20–30 minutes in normal traffic. Ride-share services such as Uber and Lyft can also be booked from designated pick-up zones. 

DTW offers a range of parking options including short-term, long-term and value lots. Check the airport’s website for current rates and to pre-book. 

The McNamara and Evans terminals are connected by a free 24-hour shuttle bus running every 10 minutes. Within the McNamara Terminal, an automated ExpressTram runs along Concourse A to quickly move you between gate clusters. 

A number of airlines fly into and out of Detroit Airport, including Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United, Southwest, Spirit Airlines, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Air Canada and many more. As Delta’s second-largest hub, DTW offers direct flights to over 140 destinations worldwide. 

As a general rule, you should aim to arrive at Detroit Airport at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. During peak travel periods or early morning departures, arriving a bit earlier is a smart move. Yes, Detroit Airport has several lounges across both terminals, including multiple Delta Sky Clubs, the Lufthansa Business Lounge and the Escape Lounge. Amenities typically include food, drinks, Wi-Fi and in some cases showers. Access may be possible depending on your ticket class, frequent flyer membership, credit card benefits or by purchasing a day pass. Several of DTW’s lounges offer rest areas and shower facilities. The Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport hotel is connected directly to the McNamara Terminal – ideal for overnight layovers or early morning flights. The free inter-terminal shuttle also stops at the hotel.
