Wild outdoor adventures to tick off your Bucket List

12 August 2019

In a world where we spend most of our time staring at screens, sitting in traffic and worrying about work deadlines - it’s time to leave the concrete jungle behind and get back to nature! Answer the call of the wild with these must-do wildlife experiences in the great outdoors.

1. Walk on the wild side in Kruger

This isn’t your average African safari. Climb out of the 4x4 and explore the bushveld on your own two feet along the Mathikithi Trail in Kruger National Park. Head out from your rustic camp at dawn and follow the path of big game such as elephant and rhino. Then relax with an ice-cold G&T as the sun sets on the horizon. This is what real wildlife holidays are made of.

2. Canoe through the Okavango Delta

The winding waterways of the Okavango Delta in Botswana are teeming with life – both great and small. Climb into a traditional mokoro canoe and paddle along a serene stretch of river. Spot a herd of elephant bathing at the water’s edge. Spy colourful birdlife wading along the banks and flitting between the branches of a baobab tree. Bliss.

3. Have a bath with elephants in Thailand

The Asian elephant is far smaller and milder mannered than its African cousin. Unfortunately, these gentle giants are often exploited for tourists’ entertainment – giving rides and doing tricks. The good news is that things are getting better and there are ways to experience these intelligent creatures on their own terms. Visit Elephant Nature Park for an authentic encounter with rescued elephants. Truly a life-changing experience!

4. Meet gorillas in the mist in Uganda

This is nature at its most untamed. Trek through the lush jungles of Uganda on a guided search for the majestic (and endangered) gorilla. These impressive beasts may be hard to track and finding a troop is not always guaranteed, but it's well worth the trek!

5. Explore the amazing Galapagos Islands in Ecuador

No travel bucket list is complete without mention of the incredible Galapagos Islands. This secluded archipelago just off the coast of Ecuador is teeming with a myriad species of wildlife found nowhere else on earth. Spot the giant Galapagos tortoise. See the weird and wonderful marine iguanas that live on land and sea. And catch a glimpse of blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds and many more.

6. Party with lemurs in Madagascar

Ok, these lemurs are less likely to impress you with their dance moves like a certain animated movie would have you believe. But they’re no less fascinating to see! Take a wildlife tour to amazing Madagascar to get up close and personal with these lively primates.

7. Swim with whale sharks in Mexico

If you’ve already ticked swimming with great whites off your list, it’s time to up the ante and get into the water with these ancient behemoths of the ocean. Growing up to 12 metres or more in length, these massive creatures span back 60 million years in time. Luckily you won’t need a cage for this one, as whale sharks are filter feeders. Phew!
