Starlight Cruises announced in 2009 that their luxury liner MSC Sinfonia will will start operating regular cruises from Durban & Cape Town to destinations in the Indian Ocean and the Mozambique Channel. The Sinfonia is a very modern cruise liner that can accommodate 2100 passengers in 778 cabins, 135 of which are luxury suites with their own private balcony.
The introduction of this luxury liner into South Africa has opened up the cruise industry and brought huge benefits to the city and ports of Durban & Cape Town. This 250m long ship has a maximum speed of 21 knots and has 9 passenger decks. There are three restaurants, 7 bars, 2 swimming pools and special areas set aside for teens and smaller children, all of whom up to the age of 18 travel free.
Starlight Cruises’ Sinfonia also sports an Internet Café, a Casino, a Theatre and a Business and Conference Centre. There is a Gym, a Fitness Centre and, of course a Medical Centre. There are plenty of facilities on board and nobody has any reason to be board. Dress and activities are all casual, though dark suits and cocktail dresses are the order of the day for the Captain’s Cocktail Party.
It can get chilly at sea in the evening, so it is wise to have a sweater handy. The onboard entertainment provided on Starlight Cruises is excellent – there are cabaret shows, dancers, comedians, a disco for the young at heart and the ship has its own resident dance band.
