Containing one of the largest, most comprehensive art collections in the country, Boston’s Museum of Fine Art (MFA) is considered to be one of the greatest art museums in the world with over 450,000 pieces of work in its vast collection. Opened on the nation’s centenary in 1876, the Museum of Fine Arts continues to be one of the cultural highlights of this great city.
Resembling a large Greek temple, this historic museum features magnificent exhibit space and displays art from ancient Egypt to modern times. In 2010 MFA opened the Art of the Americas wing. This important new wing features four levels of significant American art from ancient times to today. As the museum continues to expand it has added a second wing devoted to contemporary art and has added additional gallery space for their European, Asian and African collections.
In addition to the museum’s vast permanent collection, it also features many temporary exhibits covering topical human interest subjects. Whether it’s a permanent or temporary exhibit, there are many different art forms represented at MFA. From paintings, prints and drawings, to photography, textiles and jewellery, MFA brings its historic collection together in beautiful gallery settings that one would expect in a world class museum.
The museum is located southwest of the city centre and can be reached by the subway system. The Green Line E train stops at The Museum of Fine Arts Station and the Orange Line stop is at Ruggles. Parking is available in nearby public car parks if driving however they fill up quickly during popular exhibitions.
