The Remarkables are called that for a reason – arguably one of the most beautiful views in New Zealand, the towering mountain range rises some 2000 metres sharply off the south eastern shore of lake Wakatipu, creating a stunning backdrop to the towns that sit at their feet. Queenstown is wedged at their base, and offers spectacular views of the one reason most people visit – the ski fields.

The Remarkables are famous for their three wide mountain bowls and some 220 hectares of skiable snow. The standard season is from June 18 to October 16, a time when Queenstown is at its busiest – it is hard to walk down the main street without being bombarded by tourists donning snow gear or hiring skis. But they come because the Remarkables have a reputation for having some of the best powder in New Zealand. The annual snowfall is nearly 3.7 metres, and it’s typically soft, cold and dry – perfect for cutting with a snowboard or skis.

Shuttles run from throughout the day from Queenstown to the ski resort, some 1500 metres up the mountain. From there, six lifts take 6,300 skiers per hour up to the top of the run. The terrain is quite versatile, with an almost even split of beginner, intermediate and advanced slopes, making it ideal for beginners as well as those who crave something a little more daring. The Remarkables is home to award winning learning facilities, ideal for green skiers and young kids, however if you’re a vetran of the slopes you’ll be challenged by the narrow chutes and rocky drops on offer on the advanced runs.

The ski resort also offers a magnificent café, a retail shop and equipment hire, as well as regular life music on deck creating an easy, laid-back atmosphere. The Remarkables is all about fun, and the love of the great outdoors and a big mountain environment – wether you’re a avid skier, fresh onto the slopes or just wanting to relax with a hot chocolate and a stunning mountain view, this is the place for you.
