Located on the northern fringes of Kowloon is one of Hong Kong’s most popular places of worship, Wong Tai Sin Temple. This expansive Taoist complex is renowned for the fortune-telling practice of kau cim, reputedly answering so many prayers the practice has been labelled “what you request is what you get.” But even if you’re not particularly devout, this vast temple is both an important historical site and a soothing oasis of reflection in the midst of a bustling city.
Founded in 1921 some 3,000 steps from Kowloon pier, Wong Tai Sin Temple grew rapidly in importance and popularity. Originally welcoming only religious adherents, today the temple is open to the public and has firmly entrenched itself as one of Hong Kong’s most popular tourist attractions. Visitors of all religious affiliations and many with none at all flock to the busy temple complex to experience a slice of old-world Hong Kong in the midst of an often chaotic modern city.
To escape the hordes of incense-burning devotees, head around back to the peaceful Chinese garden which acts as a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the occasionally crowded temple complex. Or otherwise take a deep breath and simply admire your surroundings, in what is one of the last vestiges of traditional Hong Kong.
