There are few places in the Northern Territory where you'll be able to bag a more memorable souvenir than at the Marrawuddi Gallery. Entirely run by the traditional owners of the local land, Marrawuddi showcases not only artists residing within Kakadu, but also those from Arnhem Land and other associated Art Centres.
The gallery is located at the Bowali Visitor Centre in Kakadu National Park's major public hub. Within the gallery you'll find a great range of intricate artworks – browse paintings, carvings, woven mats and baskets, books, jewellery and cards, then take home whatever you fall in love (for a price of course). If baggage allowance is a problem, don't sweat more than the you have to in the Northern Territory heat because the gallery offers a freight and shipping service.
Art is just the start
Open from 8am to 5pm almost every day of the year, one of the other notable things about the gallery is its owners. As well as operating the gallery and promoting local artists across the region, the Djabulukgu Association are both socially and politically active in the area. A big patron of local Aboriginal culture, it's also well worth checking out the tours and accommodation offered by the Djabulukgu Association while you're at the gallery or when you book your holiday.
Just remember when you visit Marrawuddi Gallery, entry is free but you'll first need to pay to enter Kakadu National Park. If you're coming all the way to the gallery, chances are you'll want to do spend some time exploring the park anyway. For $25 you can do so for up to 14 days.
