An imposing and iconic figure on the Gold Coast skyline, Q1 is an impressive sight. Rising off the Gold Coast esplanade in majestic fashion, the massive building stretches high into the sky, offering stunning views across the ocean and hinterland to those who dare climb to the top.

Q1’s claim to fame is 322.5 metres of imposing metal and concrete rising above the Gold Coast skyline, including some 98 metres of steel spire stretching up from level 75. It is the tallest residential building in Australia and in the southern hemisphere, and one of the most impressive architectural feats on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

Opened in 2002, Q1 is primarily a hotel, home to some 526 elite apartments. However the reason most travellers visit is to brave SkyPoint, Australia’s only beachside observation deck. Taking up level 77 and 78 of Q1, it sits some 230 metres from the esplanade, making it the highest enclosed vantage point of the Gold Coast. The breathtaking ocean and hinterland views are worth the entrance fee – on a good day, vistas stretch from Byron Bay to Brisbane, right out across the Pacific and back into the lush, green hinterland.

Those wanting to stretch a little higher can tackle the SkyPoint Climb, Australia’s highest external building walk. Leaving from level 75, climbers don a specially designed climb suit and full body harness before locking onto the climb rail and walking 298 stairs to the summit of Q1. Climbers can opt to take the safe rout close to the rail, or walk out along the edge of the stairs to appreciate the 270-metre drop straight down to the streets below.

After your exhilarating climb, be sure to try some of the tasty delights at SkyPoint’s restaurant – or head to the bar if you’re in need of something a little stronger. If the climb has left you a litter worse for wear, head to Q1s spa for some serious relaxation – buffs, scrubs, wraps and masks are all on offer. Q1 is right in the heart of Surfers Paradise, easily accessible via private or public transport. If in doubt, head for the tallest building you can see – Q1 leaves all other highrises on the coast in its shadow.
