Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is home to natural bushland and rainforest that hundreds of native Australian animals call home. Come to cuddle a koala, hand-feed rainbow lorikeets or watch a world-class reptile show – it’s a great place for kids and adults alike to see and experience our wildlife up close.
Located on Queensland’s stunning Gold Coast, Currumbin Sanctuary opened in 1947 as a project to stop the local rainbow lorikeet population destroying local flower plantations. To this day, hundreds of free-flying lorikeets flock to the Sanctuary, to the delight of those waiting to hand-feed the beautiful birds. Located on 27 hectares of lush eucalypt bushland and subtropical rainforest, Currumbin is a sanctuary to birds, reptiles and marsupials alike.
One of the main drawcards for Currumbin Sanctuary is the wide range of displays, shows and other interactive experiences on offer. As well as lorikeet feeding, the sanctuary gives visitors plenty of opportunity to interact with wildlife. Koalas are more than happy to be cuddled (so are crocodiles, if you dare!); kangaroos laze about in the sun waiting to be patted, photographed and fed; there’s a fantastic Aboriginal Dance Show, offering insight into local indigenous culture; and Currumbin is home to one of the best free-flight bird shows in the country.
If you’re after something a bit different, there are opportunities to visit the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital, where over 6,500 sick, injured and orphaned animals are cared for and rehabilitated. Alternatively, you could tackle the high ropes adventure course, where sixty-five challenges from flying foxes to Tarzan swings take you on an adventure higher into the rainforest.
Parking is available at minimal cost directly opposite the entrance to the park, with free street parking available in the surrounding streets. Alternatively, the Currumbin Express Coach runs from the Gold Coast airport and Surfers Paradise multiple times throughout the day. All proceeds from the park go straight back into the Sanctuary, making it a great investment in the future of Australia’s flora and fauna, as well as an exciting family day out.
