The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory is the regions main cultural facility housing some of the most significant works of art from the Aboriginal and Southeast Asia cultures. In addition to its fine art collection, the museum’s exhibits also feature displays about the life and history of Darwin and the Northern Territory.
From its five major galleries, the facility houses a permanent collection with an emphasis on the area’s history and culture. One popular exhibit details the events of Cyclone Tracey, a significant natural disaster that took place on Christmas Eve 1974.
The museum is also dedicated to natural history and possesses one of the most important collections of natural science artefacts in Australia. MAGNT hosts several touring exhibitions each year from artists and galleries around Australia.
The museum’s modern facility is set among beautiful gardens on the shores of Darwin’s Fannie Bay. Admission to the museum is free and the site features a gift shop and cafe. Accessible by public transport the museum and gallery is located a short distance from Darwin’s CBD.
