The Broome Bird Observatory is in an area of stunning natural beauty and one of the best places in the world for bird watching, nature photography and bush walks. Many other native wildlife species can also be seen here along with lush coastal plant life, all set against the beautiful backdrop of Roebuck Bay, just outside of Broome.
With over 150,000 species of birds visiting the Roebuck Bay area every year this is one of the best places in the world to see so many species in one area. The stunning coastal environment makes for a memorable bird and wildlife watching experience and offers excellent photographic opportunities.
While the observatory’s facilities are simple and utilitarian they fit in to their pristine natural setting. Featuring an excellent collection of resource material the observatory also offers well marked tracks with signage for self-guided tours as well as organised nature tours and talks. The observatory also offers accommodation packages from short overnight visits to extended stays.
Roebuck Bay lies 25 kilometres east of Broome and is situated off of Crab Creek Road. The road leading to the sanctuary is accessible by car with the possible exception being the summer rainy season when the road may be less passable. The observatory website advises that the last six kilometres of the road is often very corrugated making for bumpy driving conditions. Four wheel drive vehicles are always recommended.
