The area around and including the Gove Peninsula is the traditional home of the Yolngu Aboriginal people. Today the main town of Nhulunbuy – home to more than 4000, and often referred to as "Gove" – services the local bauxite mine and alumina refinery.

Beyond the mining area, there still remains unspoiled land and seascapes for which the tropical north is known. You can appreciate the local flora and fauna on several local tours. Flights to Gove usually operate from Darwin and Cairns but note the best time to travel for dry weather is June–October.
