How to Save for Your Dream Trip

16 April 2018

We know what you’re thinking: “But Flight Centre… Saving is way easier said than done when we’ve got so many expenses and so little money.” We get you. That’s why we’ve assembled this little list on where you get started with your savings so you can enjoy something money can’t buy: once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Ask yourself “Why?”
Figure out why you want to travel: do you want to try out new foods and experience new cultures? Are you looking for unique adrenaline-filled moments that you wouldn’t get away with while in the same province as your mom? Do you want to meet new people and “rough it” just so you can tell your kids how hardcore you were one day? Whatever your motivation, figure it out. That will give you the answer to where you want to go. If the answer seems obvious—for example, “I want to travel for food and so that must mean a trip to flavour-filled Asia”—then go for it, but if you’re not sure where your travel motivations are going to take you, reach out to one of our friendly, knowledgeable Travel Experts who can point you in the right direction.

Figure out How
There are a two “Hows” involved here:

1. How much will this cost?
2. How am I going to save that money?

Let’s tackle the first how. Once you’ve figured out why you’re travelling and, as a result, where you’re travelling to, it will be easy to establish how much your trip is going to cost. Keep the following in mind when planning your budget:

  • Travel costs (flights, transport etc.)
  • Accomodation costs
  • Daily food allowance
  • “Fun money” (You know? The cash that goes towards all those once-in-a-lifetime experiences.)

Alright, this looks like a lot, and is probably overwhelming. That’s precisely why we’ve put together to many incredible deals and holiday types to choose from—if you opt for one of our packages you can find a holiday that covers all of the above. Use our latest deals to gauge the amount of money you’re saving for, and then save that plus ten percent (rather save too much than too little).

Let’s move onto the other how: How am I going to save that money? This part is fairly simple. All you need to do is breakdown the total amount you want to save into smaller, more achievable amounts. Compare this to your monthly income (spoiler-alert you may have to have to get a student job if you want to save extra money) and work out how many months you’ll have to save before you can go away. You also need to remember that sometimes saving for your holiday is going to mean sacrifices in other areas of your life: try and limit buying new clothes, eating out and going on too many nights out with friends. Trust us, when you’re partying it up in Ibiza or at a Full-Moon Party in Thailand, you’ll be happy you passed up those trips to the local student spot on Phuza Thursday.

Breakdown Your Rands
Once you’ve figured out how much you’re going to have to save, imagine that amount as a daily figure. For example, if you work it out to be R1000 per day, the next time you reach for a new pair of kicks that costs R900, remind yourself you’ve basically wasted a day in paradise for a pair of shoes you might not even like in a year. Going out for a night with your friends? That R250 spent on drinks is money that could have been spent on a night out in Bali! You get the gist.

Open a Notice Deposit Account
Whether it’s a seven-day or thirty-day account (or whatever else your bank offers), make sure your money isn’t drop-of-the-hat accessible. When you’re in a pinch (or confronted with a tempting season sale, for example), it might be easy to forget what you’re saving for and before you know it you will have burnt through all your savings. If you have a notice deposit account you will have some time to think about if you really need to take that money out of savings.
