The Ultimate African Wildlife Bucket List: From Kruger to Chobe

There’s nothing quite like an African safari. The golden light, the rumble of hooves across bushveld, and the intense competition between friends and family to determine who has the best ‘bush eyes’ and who saw the lion first.

There’s nothing quite like an African safari. The golden light, the rumble of hooves across bushveld, and the intense competition between friends and family to determine who has the best ‘bush eyes’ and who saw the lion first.

Whether it’s your first game drive or your tenth, Africa’s wildlife never loses its magic. And that’s why we keep coming back. Like the famous quote says, ‘if you can only visit two continents in your lifetime, visit Africa twice.’ From our own doorstep in Kruger to Botswana’s Chobe River and the spectacular dugongs of Mozambique, here’s how to start ticking off your ultimate African wildlife bucket list with Flight Centre.

Let’s start right at home.

Kruger National Park, South Africa

Kruger is the safari that started it all, for most South Africans. And for good reason. It’s home to the Big Five, hundreds of bird species, and some of the best lodges and camps on the continent. People flock from across the world to enjoy Kruger, and we can simply pop by anytime we want. Talk about lucky! Book a Kruger Park holiday package today.

You could stay inside the park for that classic bush experience, or base yourself just beyond its borders, whether in a surrounding private game reserve or nearby one of the Kruger gates for easy game drives. It’s also easy to combine Kruger with other South African escapes, like the waterfalls of the Panorama Route to the country charm of Hazyview or White River. With new regional flights available, Kruger is becoming an easy long weekend away too. Discover more about the Panorama Route.

Chobe National Park, Botswana

For elephant lovers, Chobe is the ultimate destination. This park in Botswana’s north is famous for its river safaris, where herds of elephants gather at the water’s edge while hippos’ surface nearby. It is one of the best places on the continent to see wildlife in its natural environment.

Game drives are only part of the story here. A Chobe River cruise gives you a completely different perspective, as you drift quietly past crocodiles, buffalo, and birdlife reflected in the water at sunset. And if a few nights doesn’t sound like long enough, you can always extend your stay with some time in the iconic Okavango Delta. Alongside spectacular game viewing, Mokoro canoe excursions take you gliding through clear channels and offer close encounters with antelope, elephants, and a spectacular variety of birdlife.

Expert tip

Early morning and late afternoon game drives are optimal as animals are most active.

Etosha National Park, Namibia

Namibia’s landscapes feel almost otherworldly, with their salt pans, desert-adapted lions, and endless open horizons. Etosha is the jewel of the north, a place where rhino and giraffe gather around shimmering waterholes and where self-drive safaris offer freedom and adventure.

Stay at Onguma Bush Camp or Etosha Village for easy access to the park’s most scenic areas. Want to stay longer? We can’t blame you. Add a few days in Sossusvlei, where the red dunes glow at sunrise and oryx wander through the desert, for a completely different kind of wilderness experience. Or, head over to Walvis Bay for their famous flocks of flamingos (try saying that one fast, three times!) if you’re after a different kind of wildlife sighting.

Kenya & Tanzania: The Great Migration

For bush wildlife on an epic scale, head north to East Africa. Every year between July and September, millions of wildebeest and zebra move across the Serengeti and Maasai Mara in search of greener plains. It is one of the greatest natural spectacles on Earth.

Even when the herds have moved on, the game viewing remains outstanding. Lions rest in tall grass, giraffes stretch above the acacia trees, and cheetahs scan the horizon. Even outside migration season, both parks deliver iconic safaris with lions, leopards, and endless savannah views.

After your safari, unwind with a few days in Mombasa or Zanzibar, for white sands and calm blue water. And speaking of blue water…

Mozambique: Going Underwater

African wildlife might be synonymous with safaris, but South Africans know that there’s loads more to Africa than just the Big Five. A short hop across the border to Mozambique takes the safari underwater, where wildlife trips meet barefoot island life.

You could trade the game vehicle for a dhow, go snorkelling with turtles, or book an excursion to swim with dolphins and maybe even spot a rare dugong or whale shark in Bazaruto. And at the end of the day, there’s always the option to sleep in, take it easy, and relax at a beachfront resort where seafood is caught fresh and served under the stars. Book a Mozambique holiday package now.
