Renowned for its gorgeous lagoon, beautiful beaches, ancient forests and freshly caught oysters, it’s little wonder that Knysna is considered the most sought-after town along the Garden Route. Nestled within the beautiful Garden Route National Park, Knysna is surrounded by natural beauty with the crystalline lagoon, warm Indian Ocean and a broad expanse of lush indigenous forest on all sides.

This enchanting town has plenty to offer travellers in search of exquisite views, lazy days on the beach, exciting water sports and local wildlife.

Hike through dense forests up to Western Knysna Head and watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean, hop on a mountain bike and explore the many trails through the wilderness, wander through famous Cape Fynbos and spot a multitude of animal species along the way. Go rock climbing against the dramatic 50m cliff in Featherbed Nature Reserve, explore the area on a quad bike, go paragliding over the immense forest canopy or choose from one of the many other high-energy activities. Golfers can also work on their swing at two internationally recognised golf courses in the area.

Birding enthusiasts should grab a pair of binoculars and keep an eye out for the beautiful Knysna Loerie, as well as the majestic Fish Eagle, dainty Swee Waxbills, colourful sunbirds and the rare Knysna Woodpecker.

Water lovers should head offshore and charter a boat along the ocean or lagoon. Take a ferry across to Featherbed Nature Reserve or to the Knysna Heads, kayak along the lagoon, and enjoy a scenic sunset or relaxing lunchtime cruise. For an adrenalin rush, go shark cage diving, discover the Paquita shipwreck on the ocean floor, and go black-water tubing at Storms River. There are also plenty of opportunities for whale and dolphin watching along the coastline.

When it comes to eating out, Knysna certainly has its fair share of restaurants, coffee shops, pubs and farm stalls. Be sure to sample the delicious oysters that Knysna is famous for. Travellers in July should also make the most of the lively Knysna Oyster Festival that attracts tourists from all over the country.

Experience Knysna’s many facets of natural beauty.
