Thailand’s enticing paradise islands – Phuket, Phi Phi and Krabi

18 May 2016

Flight Centre’s 8-night Island Hopping Journey of Thailand is perfect for the adventurous traveller looking to dive deep into the cultural exploration Thailand offers, all the while showing off the incredible sights of it’s incredible islands.

The beauty of southeast Asia has been written about time and again, but the beauty of the Thai islands has never been so perfectly captured than through the eyes of South African photographers Roy Potterill and Jimmy Reynolds…

Phuket on two wheels

Easily the busiest island in Thailand, Phuket is full of surprises. One of the best ways to get around is on scooters that can easily be rented for between 200 and 400 Thai Baht (about R130) per day. Winding along the coastal roads of the island offer some exceptional sightseeing.

At night, Phuket’s Patong Beach turns into one of the country’s most vibrant party spots. You can take a walk down Bangla Road to get a real sense for Thailand’s nightlife, or if the party scene is not for you, find a view spot and appreciate the amazing scenery of Thailand.

Phuket travel tips from Roy and Jimmy:

• Hire the scooters, it’s the best way to get around easily and independently
• Make sure to get to Chalong Bay before sunset to get a magical view over the Big Buddha statue.
• The southern section of the island offers some great viewpoints for sunset too
• Make sure to try out a Nutella pancake from a street cart!

Enchanting Phi Phi Island Set on it’s own remote beach, Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort offers one of the most beautiful locations you’ll find on the island to stay. This distinctive resort overlooks the azure waters of the Andaman Sea, and offers complete seclusion.

To explore the surrounding waters, Roy and Jimmy headed out on a long tail boat. The private hire took them discover Phi Phi Ley, the secluded bay where The Beach was filmed. The guys also ventured out to whichever bay took their fancy, snorkeled and swam, and when they were hungry headed to Ton Sai Pier to eat fresh, local fare overlooking the small, but busy, port.

Phi Phi travel tips from Roy and Jimmy:

• Definitely visit the small village behind Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort. It’s got lots of vibe!

• Don’t miss out on a meal or drinks at Aroy Kaffeine, a café in the village

• Hire your long tail boat from a local rather than you hotel, it’ll cost far less (about 2500 Thai Baht or R1100 for the day) The beaches (and parks) of Krabi With its lush green forests and farmlands, Krabi is covered in national parks and reserves. This is a great place to really unwind at the end of a trip and take in the slower pace of the island.

While in Krabi, take time to explore the quaint local villages and live like a local.

Our team uncovered the hidden marine treasures on a Four Island Speed Boat Tour, covering Koh Tub, Chicken Island, Phra Nang Bay and the almost-hidden Railay Beach.

Krabi travel tips from Roy and Jimmy:

• Hiring a scooter to drive into the mountains is an awesome way to see the interior of the island and visit some smaller towns off the major tourism routes
• Find the time to get out the the Emerald Pool, a massive pool filled with pure spring water
• Onang Beach is a great place to enjoy the more relaxed nightlife of Krabi

Flight Centre travellers get to see the main attractions on each island, but still have plenty time to explore at their own pace too, the perfect combination to bring unique memories of this special place.
