We firmly believe that mothers deserve the very best, year-round. However, once a year, special Mother’s Day treats are the order of the day. The day is a chance to spoil the number one woman in our lives with something a little more special. While we wish we could whisk ourselves and mom away for a magical break somewhere far, far away, at the moment the best we can do is spoil her at home.
Here are our expert-approved iconic Mother’s Day travel experiences to bookmark, and for now, how you can recreate a little bit of this magic at home.
Pina coladas and palm trees
Nothing spells out relaxation quite like a tropical island escape. We’re truly blessed in South Africa with a fabulous array of postcard-perfect islands, less than a four-hour flight away. Take your pick from Mauritius, Mozambique, Zanzibar and Reunion Island.
Each island has its unique charms and attractions. Shop till you drop in Grand Baie or take to the warm Indian Ocean for watersports in Mauritius. In exotic Zanzibar, enjoy a sunset dhow cruise or a tour of Stone Town’s stunning architecture and heritage. In Mozambique, feast on peri-peri prawns and swim with wild dolphins in the Quirimbas Islands. In Reunion Island, feast on French croissants and work them off hiking an active volcano.
Recreate it at home: Bring the tropical island feel into your home. Banish mom into the bedroom while you whip up a tropical cocktail and snacks. Set up a picnic in the garden or a little area in the lounge decked out with beach towels and umbrellas. Remember to dress the part: Swimwear and sun hat!
Shop till you drop
If a lengthy shopping session is your mom’s idea of the best adventure, chances are her dream holiday destination is a lengthy shopping trip in Thailand, Turkey or Dubai.
In Turkey, she can browse for trendy towels and glass lamps in Istanbul, or snap up Berber rugs, fringed cushions, slippers and spices in the souks of Marrakesh, Morocco. If she prefers air-conditioning, head to the mega-malls of the Middle East. Dubai’s malls, not only house the world’s priciest designer brands but après-shopping visits include the aquarium in the Dubai Mall or take to the ski slopes at Ski Dubai inside the Mall of the Emirates.
Recreate it at home: Give her a gift voucher to spend when she can hit the shops once more. She can even browse now, adding items to her cart to be delivered post lockdown.
A Thailand escape
Ah, every South African’s favourite holiday. A Thai break presents everything we love most about holidays – easy and effortless with ample sun, swimming, shopping and great food – cooked by someone else!
Recreate it at home: Whip up her favourite Thai dish at home. Nothing whisks up back to our travel memories quite as efficiently as our senses of taste and smell.
Flower filled escapes
Does a freshly picked bunch of flowers or a beautiful garden bring your mom so much joy? Then a flower-filled escape is just the dream ticket your travel-loving mom would enjoy.
Imagine cherry blossom season in Japan or wandering London’s Chelsea Flower Show? Or exploring the almost 7 million flowers that bloom in the Netherlands Keukenhof Gardens come springtime. Or hitting the road for a road trip to see the Cape Wildflowers peeking their sunny faces out? Dreamy escapes worth adding to the “one day” Pinterest board.
Recreate it at home: Use the time at home to get your garden – be it a courtyard, lawns or merely a few potted herbs on the windowsill – blooming. Enjoy quality bonding time repotting fresh bulbs and afterwards, sit down and relax with a good cup of tea and some scones or rusks.
Gingerbread and Christmas Markets
Is mom’s big dream holiday taking in a European Christmas market, bundled up warmly in a winter wonderland? There’s nothing quite like the scent of steaming Glühwein, Stöllen and gingerbread cookies to transport you to Europe’s festive squares decked with twinkling lights and the sound of Christmas carols.
Recreate it at home: Don the apron and whip up a batch of gingerbread bookies and glühwein. Now that the weather is getting chillier, and with no excuse to leave the house, there’s no better time to get cosy at home.
Tick off a bucket list item
Ticking off a bucket-list trip or experience is impressive in itself. But doing that together, with your mom, will mean a beautiful shared memory of picnicking underneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris, watching the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti, or tucking into a traditional Cape Malay meal in Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap.
Recreate it at home: Stay home now so you can tick that bucket list item off with mom later. Research online and start filling up your Pinterest board and Instagram feed with all the marvellous places and experiences you can enjoy together in the future.
