Livin La Vida Vegas

12 June 2013

Often called America’s playground or Sin City, there’s no doubt that Las Vegas certainly lives up to its raunchy reputation.  From colossal casinos with their endless rows of slot machines and card tables to award winning restaurants serving dishes prepared by some of the best chefs the world over, day clubs, night clubs, and incredible shows you’ll be spoilt for choice of incredible things to do in this crazy city.

Like an oasis of insanity in the middle of the Nevada desert, there’s so much debauchery happening all at one time, it’s hard to know where to begin.  During the day, explore the strip.  Ride the rooftop rollercoaster at New York New York, peruse the Forum Shops in Caesar’s Palace or take a canal ride at the Venetian.  If you’re up for a party then head to one of the city’s posh pool bars like Marquee in the Cosmopolitan.  This ultra-cool day club always has a totally rad DJ spinning the season’s hottest tracks while club goers lounge poolside with a cool drink.  Not a bad way to spend the afternoon and beat the Vegas heat!

If you've already done the strip and are keen to try something different, hitch a ride on the Deuce bus to the outlet mall’s just outside of town or rent a car and drive to the Hoover Dam.  Built during the Great Depression, this massive architectural feat divides the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona.

By evening, head back to the city and watch as Vegas comes alive.  Casino’s light up and the musical chimes of the slot machines ring throughout the city.  Grab a bite to eat before heading out for a show or a night of dancing.  For that taste of famous all-American favourites try FIX in the Bellagio.  Always packed with a young crowd chowing some sliders or gourmet mac n cheese, this is a perfect place to start your night.  Need a little sophistication?  The classic Italian menu of Lavo will please any palette with their extensive variety of delicious plates.

Pre-book some tickets for an after dinner show.  With each hotel featuring their own headline act ranging from the acrobatics of Cirque de Soleil’s “O” to the mystifying magic of the MGM Grand’s David Copperfield and everything in between, this is a great way to spend one of your nights.  The racy adult antics of Zumanity at New York New York is a Vegas institution, while the classic musical score of Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian is a pleaser for all ages.   Do a little research and find the perfect show for you.

We hope you’ve still got energy after a big day because after the sun sets is when Vegas really heats up.  Party the night away at Tao in the Venetian or the celebrity favourite Le Chateau in Paris.  As many of the clubs often have celebrity appearances and popular DJ’s playing, planning tickets in advance can be a good plan to avoid long line-ups and hefty cover charges.
