Five tips for a successful road trip

30 December 2020

With our top five Flight Centre road trip tips, you'll be able to take the family, mates and everyone else on a road trip that truly exceeds expectations. You'll be confident and ready to hit the road in no time. After all, South Africa awaits!

1. Plan your route

While this may seem to be an obvious tip, planning your route entails a bit more than meets the eye – and plays a key role in ensuring you're getting the most out of your road trip. For starters, look into your desired route, and plan your stops accordingly.

Are you eager to try some of the region's delicious cuisine? Bookmark local restaurants, farm stalls or markets en route. Not only will you give yourself a break from driving, but you’ll get to sample some great local specialties and goodies along the way.

Check where the petrol stations are ahead of time and preferably fill up the petrol tank before setting off.

2. Have a flexible itinerary

This road trip tip is a must. Put simply, try not to over plan. Schedule in time for those unexpected mishaps, whether it's a traffic delay, the dreaded "road works ahead" stop-and-go, or an unforeseen puncture or delay.

While it's great to have a concrete road trip itinerary, an overscheduled one (with no wiggle room for the unexpected) could leave you running behind schedule if everything doesn't run according to plan.

Schedule more time than you think you need. Ensure you can check into your accommodation on time, make it to that tour and get to the restaurant before closing time. The last thing you'd want is to have to cancel reservations or activities because you're running late.

3. Choose the right set of wheels

The size and type of car is essential for any hassle-free road trip. Is there enough room for everyone? Does all the luggage - pets, favourite toys and more – fit in comfortably?

Thankfully with our trusted car rental partner Avis, it's as easy as 1, 2, 3 to board a plane, pick up your Avis rental car and enjoy a relaxing stay at some of South Africa's best Homegrown Holiday spots.

4. Take the road less travelled

This is one of our most cherished road trip tips to get the most out of your time on the road.

We're often far too quick to open Google maps or Waze and search for the fastest route. It’s natural to want to get to our final destination in the quickest amount of time. But this is where we make our biggest mistake. As the popular saying goes, happiness is a journey, not a destination.

With blue skies overhead, South African scenery all around and the endless road stretching into the horizon, there's never been a better time to skip the highway and discover the road less travelled.

5. Preload entertainment

Last but not least, a successful road trip is usually helped along with great music! If you're bringing along the little ones, entertainment and distractions is a must to maintain your sanity. Load the phone or tablet with music, series, audiobooks and games and ensure you have enough snacks to keep restless fingers and rumbling stomachs satisfied.
