A luxe South African sojourn along the Garden Route

21 July 2016

South Africa, with its wide open spaces, big skies, jagged coastlines and superb restaurants, makes for the perfect roadtrip destination.

And with thousands of international travellers headed to our shores each year, it’s a wonder more South Africans aren’t scrambling to visit our gorgeous provinces throughout the year!

Photographer Lebo Lukewarm, accompanied by his fashionista girlfriend Lulama Wolf, recently travelled from the Winelands along the Garden Route and into the Klein Karoo to see what treasures they could uncover. This is their journey…

Traversing the Cape Winelands

Stretching from Constantia to the Overberg, the Cape Winelands are not only packed with incredible varietals, tasting rooms and exceptional restaurants, but boutique hotels nestled amongst the vines and fun experiences to share.

Lebo and Lulama dressed up warm for the winter weather and made sure to take in all the sights from the top of the Franschhoek Pass viewing point. The gourmet capital of South Africa, the couple also indulged in a fine dining experience at their hotel, Le Franschhoek Hotel & Spa.

Moving further along the coast to Hermanus, Lebo delighted his inner adrenaline junkie with a zipline tour with Hermanus Forest Adventures. “If I’d had more time, I would definitely have hopped on one of the quad bikes to explore the area, or taken part in a paintball match,” says Lebo.

Meanwhile, Lulama relaxed at the gorgeous Arabella Hotel and Spa, taking in the views of the surrounding area. “The drive towards Hermanus was just so scenic and beautiful, and relaxing in our enormous room at Arabella was perfect to unwind.”

Lebo and Lulama’s travel tips for The Winelands:

• Make any restaurant bookings in Franschhoek in advance. We missed out on some awesome restaurants because we hadn’t planned in advance

• The Winelands can be pretty rainy in winter, but there are tons of tasting rooms and cosy fireplaces to snuggle up next to

• Pop into Harbour Rock in Hermanus – the owner is super friendly and is one of the best seafood meals we’ve ever had. Plus the view doesn’t hurt!

Into the Klein Karoo

The last thing Lebo and Lulama expected to find in the middle of the desert is the luxurious Rosenhof Country House. “It’s such a beautiful hotel, and was my absolute favourite along the way, “ says Lulama.

Being in the ostrich farming capital of the country, it was only natural that Lebo and Lulama enjoyed this delicacy wherever they could. They also stopped in at the Safari Ostrich Farm to learn more about these clumsy birds, how their feathers sued to cost more than gold, and how the eggs are incubated now.

Stopping in at the Cango Caves was also on the highlights list for the pair. Signed u for the adventure tour, they made their way through the brightly-lit caves and twisted through crawl spaces to wonder at the stalactites and stalagmites growing from the walls.

Lebo and Lulama’s travel tips for the Klein Karoo

• Driving towards Oudtshoorn, make a stop in Calitzdorp, there are some awesome antique shops right on the main road

• The roads can be a little slow at times with the current stop-and-go for road works, so plan accordingly • Strike up a conversation! Everybody we spoke to was so friendly and helpful!

• Try make sure you have bookings in advance for Cango Caves, you don’t want to get there and get turned away

Winding down to Knysna and Oyster Bay

The twisty curves of the road from Oudtshoorn to Knysna make for a very interesting ride. It’s a two-hour drive back down to the coast, to spend some time in what is arguably one of South Africa’s most famous seaside towns.

Visiting the nearby Monkeyland was the highlight of this area. “With so many species of monkeys jumping around and running between your legs, anybody would love this!” says the couple of the guided tour of Monkeyland.

“They all have their own personalities, and getting there during feeding time was an added bonus,” says Lulama.

Stopping in at Oyster Bay Lodge Hotel for the last leg of their roadtrip, Lebo and Lulama were treated to a dune safari in a beach buggy to find out more about the coastal reserve surrounding them. This very remote lodge is perfect to chill out after a long trip says Lebo.

The highlight for Lulama was the horseback ride along the beach. “We also spotted the wild horses that live on the reserve.”

Lebo and Lulama’s travel tips for Knysna and surrounds
• You have to try Jay Jay’s restaurant in Knysna for their 10-hour ribs and game platter – ostrich, springbok and kudu
• Birds of Eden is another excellent stop for the flamingoes and the massive swans
• Drive out to the Knysna Heads; it’s so naturally beautiful!
• If you have the time, sunrise at the St Francis Bay Lighthouse is worth getting up early for
