6 Reasons To Love Mozambique

16 May 2018

If you’re a beach lover but want to get off the beaten track a bit, you’re going to want to read this. Mozambique has all the sun, sand, surf and cocktails you’re craving, and more! Here’s why a trip to Mozambique should be way up there on your holiday radar.

1. Who needs a Visa?

Not you! As a South African citizen, all you need is a passport that’s valid for six months and you’re good to go. If you want to stay longer than 30 days (lucky you!), you will need a visa though.

2. Make it rain

While the official currency in Mozambique is the Metical (MT), you can pay for most things in Rands, especially when staying at a resort. If you do need to exchange your money into the local currency, you can do it easy peasy at banks, local shops and even some markets.

3. Life’s a beach

Beach bums have come to the right place. Think 2000km of golden coastline edged by warm turquoise Indian Ocean water. Take your pick of plenty of popular or secluded island beaches, depending on what type of vibe you’re into. Lounge under a swaying palm while catching some rays or get your feet wet in the waves. Whatever floats your dhow boat!

4. Make like a mermaid

It’s hard to believe, but Mozambique may be even more beautiful beneath the waves than above. The warm crystal waters are perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving with an impressive array of marine life. Make friends with a manta ray. Say hello to a cute dugong. And swim with a gentle but giant whale shark. There’s a whole world of amazingness waiting beneath the waves!

5. See food differently

Mozambique is famous for its strong Portuguese influences. So don’t expect your everyday flavours. Think super fresh, juicy prawns and seafood char-grilled with plenty of fiery Peri-Peri sauce. Grab a spicy prego roll for lunch at the local market. Snack on some tasty cashew nuts. Then wash it all down with an ice-cold 2M beer or brave a cocktail with the local Tipo Tinto rum, fondly called R&Rs (Rum & Rasberry).

6. Party in Maputo

It’s not all just beaches and barbecues in Mozambique. The capital city of Maputo has a whole new vibe to offer if you’re looking for some urban excitement. Check out the bizarre architecture and beautiful art. Mingle with the super friendly and vibey locals. Then head out to explore the electric party scene Maputo is famous for – think street parties, beach parties, restaurant parties, live music and dancing wherever you look!
