There are dozens of festivals to attend in New York no matter what time of year you’re around. Here are just a handful of the most interesting and world-famous festivals to attend (and even tick off of your bucket list).
Food & Beverage Festivals
The Bloody Mary Festival - Who says you can’t enjoy a good drink before lunchtime? The bloody Mary Festival is the biggest celebration of the world’s most beloved brunch cocktail and is the largest event of its kind. This festival takes the classic cocktail to places you couldn’t possibly imagine, with innovative reimaginings of the drink, mouthwatering garnishes and other amazing craft spirits and local vendors to enjoy. If you were looking for an excuse to enjoy a drink before 12PM (which, let’s be honest, you were), then the Bloody Mary Festival is for you.
When: 8 April 2018
Cost: Tickets are about $40, but include tastings at all participating Bloody Mary vendors, samples of local food and other beverages, and live music. The ticket is an easy solid day’s worth of entertainment, great food and great drinks.
Farm Food Truck Festival - Who doesn’t love a great food truck? While the food truck culture only hit SA in recent years, it’s always been popular in the Big Apple. This quaint little food truck festival also features a beer and wine garden, craft vendors, live entertainment and of course amazing food.
When: Exact dates TBC, but the event usually takes place in September
Cost: ±$5 at the door, which covers your entrance and the live entertainment.
Music, Film & Comedy Festivals
Vulture Festival - Run by New York magazine’s online pop-culture page, you are guaranteed to see a festival that understands its audience. It celebrates the most current trends in music, film, comedy and TV and features some of the biggest names on screen and stage. It takes place in the hyper-trendy Meatpacking District and covers different venues. Previous famous faces to appear include a large portion of the Riverdale cast, My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Rachel Bloom, comedian Chelsea Handler, the cast of Jane the Virgin and more.
When: Exact dates TBC, but the event usually takes place in the earlier part of the year
Cost: cost depends on which parts of the festival you choose to attend. For example, tickets to the interview with the cast of Jane the Virgin cost $30, while a slot with actor Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) cost $20.
Tribeca Film Festival - Whether you’re a low key movie-goer or hardcore, self-declared critic, the Tribeca Film Festival should be on your bucket list (even if it’s only so you can say “I’ve been there”). Founded by Robert De Niro, the festival features buzzworthy premiers, under-the-radar documentaries and breakout indies you’ll be able to say you saw first.
When: 18-29 April 2018
Cost: If you don’t have a casual $1,250 lying around (who does?), the $10 matinee, and $21 evening/weekend screenings are thankfully a lot more budget friendly.
New York Comedy Festival - One of the greatest comedy events in the world, this festival features some of the greatest names in comedy. This year’s line-up includes Kevin Smith, 2 Dope Queens (Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams), Iliza Shlesinger and Parks and Recreation’s Nick Offerman (to name a few). The festival also gives attendees to “take a comedy class” where you can learn the basics around stand-up, improv and sketch-writing.
When: Exact dates TBC, but the event usually takes place in November
Cost: Ticket prices depend on the act you’re seeing along with the time and venue you see them perform.
Holi Hai - NYC Holi Hai “celebrates the coming of spring, fruitful harvests, unity, joy and acceptance”. It is all about loosening the strictness of social constructs, such as age, gender and status. There are ethnic eats and live performances to represent what the festival stands for. It is located on Governors Island—apparently one of the best kept secrets of NYC.
When: March 2018
