North West is a province in South Africa that only sprung into existence after the 1994 democratic elections. It consists of what was formerly part of the Transvaal and Cape Province as well as the Bantustan of Bophuthatswana. The capital of this beautiful province is Mafikeng and is locally known as the ‘City of Goodwill’. This city is situated just off the border of Botswana and used to be the official headquarters of the Barolong people, but is most commonly associated with the fact that it was under siege for 217 days during the Second Boer war from October 1899 – May 1900. This happening resulted in a man known as Robert Baden-Powell becoming a national hero for unveiling an obelisk and ultimately bearing light on each individual who fell whilst protecting their town. This beautiful region is also known as the Platinum Province brought on by its wealth attained from underground metals. The two largest cities in the region are Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom but other main towns include Brits and Rustenburg. The surrounding landscapes are mostly flat with scattered trees, creating a sense of freedom and purity. The towns are usually that large, contributing to the fact that this province is mostly untouched by human hand and still bears the mark of unscathed nature.
