La Batalla de Vino de Haro festival - basically a wine fight – it’s on in Spain! The La Batalla de Vino de Haro is an annual festival in the small northern Spanish town of Haro which takes place between the 28th and 30th June each year. It should actually be St Peter’s Feast Day; however it has more popularly become known as La Batalla de Vino de Haro, or the wine fight. It’s a party that basically lasts for two days, and brings this quaint little town to life as everyone gets soaked in wine, drinks the wine, and tries their hand at traditional Spanish dancing.
What La Batalla de Vino de Haro festival is all about
The festival is basically an excuse to party like there’s no tomorrow, get messy by throwing, squirting, shooting, tipping, and sploshing red wine all over your fellow party goers. The festival starts the night before as the bars, restaurants and street parties carry on for most of the night. The next morning – with or without sleep – the party continues as everyone makes their way to the top of a mountain to start the official wine fight!
What to Expect at the La Batalla festival
On the evening of the 28th June each year, the cobbled squares and roads of Haro begin to fill up with locals and visitors from across the globe. The bars and restaurants in the town square fill up and the party begins, eventually spilling over into street parties which carry on all night. The next morning everyone makes their way to the top of a mountain where bands and DJ’s perform, water trucks filled with wine spray the crowd, and the party goers squirt their water cannons at each other – in between dancing and drinking wine of course!
After the madness at the top of the hill, everyone descends back to the town and carries on with the party. With red wine induced braveness, the visitors do their best to partake in traditional dances, while the locals show them how it’s done. Basically, the party carries on for the rest of the day and into the evening.
