Amsterdam is pretty amazing to travel to any time of year. But when the clock strikes twelve on the 31st of December, things reach a whole new level of awesome. Check out these top tips for getting your party on in Amsterdam this New Year’s Eve. Plus get the low down on other hot spots and adventures to experience if you have a few days to spare.
Go all out at Oosterdok
This is officially Amsterdam’s biggest New Year’s celebration. Think famous DJs, epic fireworks and incredible views over the waterfront. Kicking off at 9pm and rocking hard until dawn, this is the ultimate party spot to ring in the New Year.
Dance the night away at Dam Square
Head to the centre of town where massive crowds of tourists and locals mingle. If the live music, blazing fireworks and buzzing beer tents don’t get you into the party mood, nothing will!
Live it up at Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein
The city's two vibiest party squares don’t disappoint come New Year's Eve. Get ready for explosive fireworks displays, pumping music and hordes of revellers. A mix of market stalls ensure that the beer keeps flowing and there’s plenty of snacks to fuel your all-night danceathon.
Hit the club
Step off the chilly streets and into one of Amsterdam’s hundreds of clubs − all hosting some of the biggest New Year’s bashes on the party scene. Take your pick of swanky soirees, hard-core raves, laid-back lounges, pumping pubs and pretty much any type of party you’re into. Party animals should definitely check out the annual Awakenings bash at Gashouder, and Loveland NYE at Mediahaven.
The morning after
Don’t let the fun end just because the sun’s come up! The annual New Year’s Dip is the perfect way to chase away your hangover with a freezing swim in the ocean. Just 30 minutes from the city, Zandvoort aan Zee sees thousands of brave/crazy swimmers splash out into the water.
Planning to extend your stay? Don’t miss these awesome adventures and experiences in and around the city too!
Eat your heart out
If you eat just one thing on your holiday in Amsterdam, makes sure it's Oliebollen. This deliciously doughnutty snack is only available from October to December, so be sure to get your fill before they’re all gone! Still hungry? Try some hearty suddervlees, a tasty beef and ale stew. Huddle around a cheesy hot pot of fondue. Snack on some snert (a thick pea soup). And top it all off with a slice of appeltaart. Yum!
Get artsy at the Rijksmuseum
Slow it down a little and take some time to appreciate the fine arts. Celebrated as one of the world’s best art museums, The Rijksmuseum features over 7500 masterpieces by renowned artists including Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh.
Light up your life
If you’re in Amsterdam over December and January, there’s no way you can miss the brilliant Amsterdam Light Festival. Mind-blowing art exhibitions light up the city and dazzle the eyes. Take the Water Colors canal cruise or explore on your own two feet with the Illuminade walking route.
Venture into Vondelpark
Keen to get a glimpse of local life? Head to the popular Vondelpark, a magical spot packed with sparkling lakes, lush lawns, trendy cafes, winding paths and pretty bridges. While it might be too cold for a picnic, it’s the perfect spot to pop in for a glass of gluwein or a hot chocolate.
The Heineken Experience
Even if you’re not a beer fan, a trip to the old Heineken is a must. Take a self-guided walking tour of the factory, savour a Heineken tasting session, check out some old-school ad campaigns, then chill out at the bar where you can even draft your own beer.
